Learning a new language might soon be as easy as logging in, and it won’t cost a single ringgit. Starting in 2026, the Selangor State Government will offer free online foreign language classes, opening the door for residents to pick up new languages from the comfort of their homes.

The announcement was made by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who said the initiative is aimed at strengthening multilingual skills while bringing Malaysians closer together.

From a Pandemic Project to a Statewide Initiative

This isn’t Selangor’s first experiment with language learning. The programme was first introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic and managed by the Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) in collaboration with language centres.

Back then, participants paid a small RM10 fee, but the response was overwhelming. Seeing the strong interest, the state government has now decided to remove the fee entirely and offer the classes for free, making them a starting point for deeper language learning.

From next year, Selangor residents will be able to learn Arabic, Mandarin, Tamil, French, German and Spanish through online classes designed to be flexible and accessible.

“Language is the strength that allows Malaysians to compete on the global stage, not a cause of division. That’s why, starting next year, Selangor will offer Arabic, Mandarin, Tamil, French, German and Spanish classes online for free, so that residents in the state can be fluent in at least three languages, including Bahasa Melayu and English,” Amirudin said.

More Than Just Language Skills

The announcement was made during the Selangor State Christmas 2025 celebration at 1 Utama, Petaling Jaya, but the message went beyond language learning.

Amirudin also highlighted the need for young people to stay relevant in a fast-changing world by mastering emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and other digital innovations.

A Small Step with Big Impact

In today’s globalised world, being multilingual isn’t just a nice skill to have, it’s a real advantage. Whether for work, travel, or connecting with people from different cultures, languages open doors.

By making these classes free and accessible online, Selangor is taking a simple but meaningful step towards building a more skilled, connected and future-ready society.
