AI tools are becoming increasingly useful for studying, working, creating content and running a business. However, access to the best features often requires a paid subscription. Now, 100,000 young Malaysians could receive three months of free AI software under a new government initiative.
There is one condition: they must first complete several online courses designed to teach them how to use AI safely and responsibly.
Here’s what young Malaysians need to know.
Who Is Eligible For The Free AI Software?
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the initiative during the launch of AI Malaysia in Cyberjaya on 28 July 2026.
Under the AI Untuk Rakyat programme, Malaysians aged between 18 and 30 can qualify for three months of free access to selected leading AI applications.
Registration is scheduled to open on 31 August 2026, in conjunction with Merdeka Day.
The first phase is expected to benefit 100,000 young Malaysians. The programme is not limited to university students, as the government said it would be open to Malaysians within the eligible age group.
What Must Participants Do?
Participants must complete a series of online courses through the government’s Rakyat Digital platform.
Simply registering for the programme will not be enough. The free AI software subscriptions will only be given to participants who successfully complete the required modules.
Anwar said the condition was introduced to ensure participants understand how to use the tools effectively and responsibly.
“We want them to follow the courses and complete them so that we are confident they can use these tools,” he said.
Based on the announcement, participants will need to:
- Be a Malaysian aged between 18 and 30.
- Register for the programme from 31 August 2026.
- Complete the required courses on the Rakyat Digital platform.
- Meet any additional completion requirements.
- Receive three months of access to selected AI applications.
The government has not yet announced the length of the courses, how participants will be assessed or how the subscriptions will be activated.
What Will Participants Learn?
The Digital Ministry is developing modules covering artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and cloud technology.
The announced modules include:
- AI Safety
- Cyber SAFE
- Agentic AI
- Generative AI
- Cloud Untuk Rakyat
The courses are expected to teach participants how AI works, what it can be used for and what risks they should be aware of.
AI Safety may cover issues such as inaccurate information, bias, privacy and responsible usage. Cyber SAFE is expected to focus on protecting personal information and practising better online safety.
Generative AI will introduce tools that can create text, images, audio, video and computer code.
Meanwhile, Agentic AI refers to systems that can plan and complete several tasks with a degree of independence. Cloud Untuk Rakyat is expected to introduce participants to cloud technology and its role in the digital economy.
Which Free AI Software Will Be Offered?
The government has not yet revealed which AI applications will be included.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said discussions were still ongoing with the relevant parties. More information will be announced once the arrangements have been finalised.
Therefore, it is not yet known whether the free AI software will include tools for writing, coding, research, design, video production or data analysis.
The government has only confirmed that successful participants will receive three months of complimentary access to selected leading AI applications.
The participating software companies, subscription plans and usage limits have not been announced.
Why Participants Must Complete The Courses First
AI tools can help users write, research, translate, analyse data, create designs, produce videos and write computer code.
These skills could be useful for students, jobseekers, freelancers and young entrepreneurs. However, using AI without understanding its limitations can also lead to problems.
AI-generated information is not always accurate. Users may also accidentally share personal or confidential information when entering instructions or uploading documents.
By requiring participants to complete the courses first, the government wants the initiative to offer more than temporary access to free AI software.
Participants will also learn how to review AI-generated answers, protect their information and use the technology responsibly.
Preparing Young Malaysians For An AI-Driven Economy
The initiative forms part of Malaysia’s wider ambition to become an AI-driven nation.
It was announced alongside the National AI Technology Action Plan 2026–2030, which sets out the country’s plans to develop AI talent, improve digital infrastructure and support local innovation.
Among Malaysia’s targets for 2030 are:
- Becoming one of the top 10 countries in the Global AI Index
- Creating 300,000 jobs linked to AI
- Adding 1.2 percentage points to GDP growth through AI
Anwar said Malaysia must strengthen cooperation between the government, industry and universities. He also called for students to be exposed to artificial intelligence from an early age.
As AI becomes more common across different industries, the free AI software initiative could give young Malaysians a chance to explore premium tools without immediately paying for a subscription.
