Malaysia witnessed an extraordinary political moment today, 27 August 2026, when three former Prime Ministers arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex on the same morning.
Here’s what happened.
Three Prime Ministers, Three Separate Legal Battles
Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob arrived at the court complex today for separate and unrelated proceedings.
Ismail Sabri was there to face a charge over an alleged failure to fully declare his assets. Najib attended the continuation of a civil lawsuit filed by 1MDB involving approximately RM23 billion, while Muhyiddin returned for his trial involving alleged abuse of power and money laundering linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.
Although the three former leaders appeared in different courtrooms for unrelated cases, their presence under the same roof created a rare moment in Malaysia’s political and legal history.
Ismail Sabri Arrived To Face A New Charge
Ismail Sabri was the first to arrive at around 8.45am, accompanied by his lawyers and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission officers.
More than 80 supporters reportedly travelled from Bera to show their support for the former prime minister, who remains the constituency’s Member of Parliament.
He was charged with failing to fully declare assets after receiving a notice from the MACC. The assets allegedly included millions of ringgit in local and foreign currencies, five gold bars, one silver bar and a gold coin.
Among the allegedly undeclared holdings were RM14.77 million, S$6.13 million, US$1.46 million, €12.16 million, three million Swiss francs and ¥363 million.
Ismail Sabri pleaded not guilty and claimed trial. Bail was set at RM300,000, while the case is scheduled for mention on September 29.
If convicted under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act, he could face a maximum jail term of five years and a fine of up to RM100,000.
His appearance meant that three consecutive former Prime Ministers were attending proceedings at the same court complex that morning.
Najib Returned For The RM23 Billion 1MDB Civil Suit
Najib arrived shortly afterwards under the escort of prison officers.
The 73-year-old was attending the continuation of a civil lawsuit filed by 1Malaysia Development Berhad and its subsidiaries. The companies are seeking to recover losses connected to transactions involving US$5.64 billion, equivalent to approximately RM23 billion.
The lawsuit accuses Najib and several other defendants of breaches of trust and statutory duties, abuse of power and conspiracy to misappropriate money belonging to 1MDB.
Former 1MDB chief executive officer Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi is among the witnesses testifying in the proceedings.
Najib is currently serving the remainder of his prison sentence following his conviction in the separate SRC International case. His original 12-year sentence was reduced to six years by the Pardons Board in 2024.
Among the three former Prime Ministers at the complex, Najib was the only one brought to court under prison escort.
Muhyiddin’s Jana Wibawa Trial Continued
Muhyiddin arrived with an entourage that included several Bersatu members before heading to another courtroom for the continuation of his Jana Wibawa trial.
The 79-year-old faces seven charges, comprising four counts of alleged abuse of power and three counts of alleged money laundering.
The abuse of power charges concern allegations that he used his position to obtain RM232.5 million in gratification for Bersatu from several individuals and companies connected to the Jana Wibawa programme.
He also faces three money laundering charges involving RM200 million allegedly received by the political party.
Jana Wibawa was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to support Bumiputera contractors and stimulate Malaysia’s economy.
Muhyiddin has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His appearance completed the unusual gathering of three former Prime Ministers, although their respective cases were not connected.
A Rare Convergence Of Three Former Prime Ministers
The three former Prime Ministers led Malaysia during different periods of significant political change.
Najib served from 2009 to 2018, Muhyiddin from 2020 to 2021, and Ismail Sabri from 2021 to 2022. Together, they represent three different administrations and important chapters in Malaysia’s recent political history.
Their respective cases were unrelated, but their simultaneous appearance created a scene rarely witnessed in the country.
