Malaysia’s payment landscape has undergone a rapid transformation. Today, cash is no longer king, and QR code have taken over. Whether you’re grabbing your morning kopi or shopping at a luxury boutique, a quick scan is all it takes to complete your transaction. This shift isn’t just a passing trend, it’s backed by numbers.

Taken from Digital 2025: Global Overview Report

According to the study by Data Reportal, a platform for global statistics, Malaysia now ranks second in the world for QR payment adoption, with 66.1% of the population using QR codes monthly. The only country ahead? China, at 67.4%. That means Malaysia has surpassed global fintech leaders like the UK, the US, and much of Europe. Not too bad for a country where even a Ramadan bazaar stall is likely to have a QR code ready!

Here are the top 10 countries with the highest QR Code usage last year according to the study:

  1. China – 67.4%
  2. Malaysia – 66.1%
  3. Thailand – 61.5%
  4. Argentina – 61.0%
  5. Brazil – 60.8%
  6. Vietnam – 58.3%
  7. Switzerland – 57.7%
  8. Taiwan – 57.4%
  9. Sweden – 54.9%
  10. Colombia – 54.8%

Why Has QR Payment Adoption Skyrocketed?

The rise of QR payments isn’t random. It’s the result of a perfect combination of technology, convenience, and industry support. At the heart of this transformation is DuitNow QR, Malaysia’s national QR standard, which has streamlined digital payments by integrating multiple banks and e-wallets into a single system.

Several factors have also propelled Malaysia to the forefront of global QR payment adoption, making digital transactions the norm rather than the exception.

A Faster, Simpler Way to Pay

Gone are the days of fumbling for exact change. With just a quick scan, transactions are completed instantly, ensuring both speed and efficiency. This frictionless experience has made QR payments the top choice for businesses and consumers alike.

QR Codes Are Everywhere

From major shopping malls and petrol stations to pasar malam stalls and roadside vendors, QR codes are now part of daily life. Whether you’re paying for your morning nasi lemak or settling a parking fee, the widespread availability of QR payment options makes cashless transactions effortless.

The Pandemic Accelerated the Shift

COVID-19 sped up the adoption of contactless payments. With hygiene concerns discouraging the use of cash, businesses quickly turned to QR payments as a safer alternative. What began as a necessity has now become the preferred mode of payment for many.

Strong Government and Industry Support

Malaysia’s financial sector has played a key role in making QR payments mainstream. Banks, fintech firms, and regulators have introduced incentives, enhanced payment infrastructure, and encouraged businesses to go digital. With active promotion, QR payments have evolved from a convenience to an expectation.

A Lifeline for Small Businesses

Over 80% of DuitNow QR merchants are small businesses, many earning less than RM5,000 per month. QR payments have allowed even the smallest vendors to participate in the digital economy without investing in costly card terminals, helping them modernize while reducing reliance on cash.

Why Your Business Needs QR Payments Right Now

In today’s fast-moving digital world, cash-only businesses are falling behind. Customers expect seamless transactions, and QR payments are no longer a luxury but a necessity. Whether you run a café, a retail shop, or a local market stall, here’s why integrating QR payments is crucial.

Customers Expect QR Payments

Over 66% of Malaysians use QR payments regularly. If your business doesn’t accept QR payments, you’re potentially losing customers to competitors who do. Shoppers today want speed and convenience, and a quick scan is often preferred over handling cash.

Minimal Cost, Maximum Convenience

Unlike credit card payment terminals that require setup fees and maintenance, QR payments require little to no investment. A printed QR code is all you need to start accepting digital payments, making it an accessible solution for businesses of all sizes.

Faster Transactions, Shorter Queues

Long waits at the cashier can frustrate customers. Cash transactions take time, especially when change is involved. QR transactions, on the other hand, are almost instant, ensuring smooth operations and reducing queue times.

More Security, Less Risk

Handling cash comes with risks like theft, counterfeit notes, and human errors in counting. With QR payments, every transaction is digitally recorded, reducing financial discrepancies and improving security for both businesses and consumers.

The Future of Payments in Malaysia

While Malaysia is moving swiftly toward a cashless society, it’s important to maintain balance. Cash still plays a role, particularly in rural areas and among older generations who may not be comfortable with digital payments.

For businesses, the key to success is offering multiple payment options. QR payments provide a seamless digital experience, but retaining cash as an alternative ensures accessibility for all customers.

Malaysia’s rapid adoption of QR payments is a milestone worth celebrating. As the digital economy expands, businesses that embrace cashless transactions will gain a competitive edge. With QR payments leading the way, the future of transactions is faster, safer, and just a scan away.
