Before leading the country, Malaysia’s Prime Ministers followed remarkably different educational paths. One studied medicine and became a doctor. Several trained in law, while others graduated in economics, Islamic studies and Malay studies.

But the journeys of Malaysia’s Prime Ministers did not end with their degrees. Some Prime Ministers entered politics shortly after completing their studies, while others first built careers as doctors, lawyers, civil servants and corporate executives.

Their qualifications would eventually take them far beyond the classroom and towards the country’s highest political office.

Here is where Malaysia’s Prime Ministers studied and how their education shaped the journeys that followed.

Tunku Abdul Rahman: University Of Cambridge (Law And History)

Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, received a Kedah Government scholarship to continue his education in Britain.

He studied at St Catharine’s College, University of Cambridge, where he pursued law and history. Cambridge records indicate that he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1926.

After returning to Malaya, Tunku joined the Kedah civil service. He later went back to Britain to continue his legal training at the Inner Temple, one of England’s four Inns of Court.

His studies were interrupted by the Second World War, but he eventually qualified as a barrister in 1949.

Just eight years later, Tunku stood at Stadium Merdeka and proclaimed Malaya’s independence on 31 August 1957. His journey from a Cambridge student and district officer to the Father of Independence became one of the most important chapters in Malaysian history.

Cambridge later awarded Tunku an honorary doctorate in law and made him an honorary fellow of St Catharine’s College.

Tun Abdul Razak Hussein: Raffles College And Lincoln’s Inn (Law)

Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, began his higher education at Raffles College in Singapore in 1940.

However, his studies were interrupted when Japanese forces invaded Malaya during the Second World War.

After the war, Tun Razak received a scholarship to study law in London. Instead of attending a conventional university, he trained at Lincoln’s Inn, one of the four Inns of Court responsible for admitting barristers in England and Wales.

He qualified as a barrister in 1950 before returning to Malaya.

Tun Razak soon entered politics and became UMNO deputy president in 1951. He later participated in the negotiations for independence and served as Malaysia’s first Deputy Prime Minister.

After becoming Prime Minister in 1970, his administration introduced major policies that shaped Malaysia’s economic and rural development, including the New Economic Policy.

Tun Hussein Onn: Indian Military Academy And Lincoln’s Inn (Military Training And Law)

The educational journey of Malaysia’s third Prime Minister, Tun Hussein Onn, was unlike that of most other national leaders.

After attending the English College in Johor Bahru, he joined the Johor Military Forces as a cadet in 1940. A year later, he was sent to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, India.

He subsequently served with the Indian Army in the Middle East during the Second World War.

After the war, Tun Hussein worked in the civil service and became involved in politics. When his early political career lost momentum, he changed direction and travelled to London to study law at Lincoln’s Inn.

He qualified as a barrister-at-law and returned to Malaya to practise as a lawyer in Kuala Lumpur.

Tun Hussein returned to politics in 1968 and became Malaysia’s third Prime Minister eight years later. Known as the Father of Unity, he devoted much of his premiership to strengthening national unity, discipline and integrity.

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad: University Of Malaya In Singapore (Medicine)

Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the only individual to have served twice as Malaysia’s Prime Minister, first from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020.

Long before entering politics, he was preparing for a career in medicine.

In 1947, Tun Mahathir received a government scholarship to study at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore.

Two years later, the college merged with Raffles College to form the University of Malaya. Tun Mahathir completed his medical studies and graduated in 1953.

He worked as a government medical officer at Alor Setar General Hospital before leaving public service to establish a private medical practice.

His career later took a dramatic turn from medicine to politics. He became Minister of Education in 1974, Deputy Prime Minister in 1976 and Malaysia’s fourth Prime Minister in 1981.

Although he studied in Singapore, Universiti Malaya officially recognises Tun Mahathir as one of its Prime Minister alumni because the university originally operated there.

Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi: Universiti Malaya (Islamic Studies)

Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, graduated from Universiti Malaya with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Islamic Studies in 1964.

Instead of entering politics immediately, Tun Abdullah began his career in the civil service.

He joined the Public Services Department as an assistant secretary and later held senior positions in several government agencies and ministries.

After more than a decade in public administration, he resigned from the civil service in 1978 to contest the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat.

Tun Abdullah eventually became Prime Minister in 2003, nearly four decades after graduating from Universiti Malaya.

Najib Razak: University Of Nottingham (Industrial Economics)

Malaysia’s sixth Prime Minister, Najib Razak, received much of his secondary and higher education in Britain.

After attending St John’s Institution in Kuala Lumpur, he continued his studies at Malvern College in Worcestershire.

Najib later enrolled at the University of Nottingham, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Economics in 1974.

Upon returning to Malaysia, he briefly worked at Bank Negara Malaysia before joining Petronas as a public affairs manager.

The death of his father, Tun Abdul Razak, changed the direction of his life. In 1976, Najib entered politics and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Pekan at just 23 years old.

He joined the Cabinet at 25 and later served as Pahang Menteri Besar, Defence Minister, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister before becoming Prime Minister in 2009.

Muhyiddin Yassin: Universiti Malaya (Economics And Malay Studies)

Malaysia’s eighth Prime Minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, graduated from Universiti Malaya with an honours bachelor’s degree in Economics and Malay Studies in 1971.

After completing his studies, Muhyiddin joined the Johor state public service as an assistant secretary responsible for training and scholarships.

He was later appointed assistant district officer of Muar before moving into the corporate sector through the Johor State Economic Development Corporation.

Muhyiddin entered Parliament in 1978. Over the following decades, he served as Johor Menteri Besar and held several federal positions, including Minister of Education, Minister of Agriculture and Deputy Prime Minister.

Nearly five decades after graduating, he became Malaysia’s eighth Prime Minister in 2020.

Ismail Sabri Yaakob: Universiti Malaya (Law)

Malaysia’s ninth Prime Minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, studied law at Universiti Malaya.

He obtained a Bachelor of Laws with Honours, commonly known as an LLB.

After completing his education and legal training, Ismail Sabri began working as a lawyer in 1985, when he was 25.

He later became involved in local government and politics before winning the newly created parliamentary seat of Bera in 2004.

Ismail Sabri subsequently held several Cabinet positions, including Minister of Youth and Sports, Minister of Domestic Trade, Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Rural Development and Minister of Defence.

He became Malaysia’s ninth Prime Minister in August 2021.

Anwar Ibrahim: Universiti Malaya (Malay Studies)

Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, also received his higher education at Universiti Malaya.

He entered the university in the late 1960s and completed a bachelor’s degree in Malay Studies.

However, Anwar’s university years involved far more than attending lectures. He served as president of the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students and the University of Malaya Malay Language Society.

His involvement in student and youth movements helped establish him as one of the country’s most prominent young activists. He later co-founded the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement, better known as ABIM, and became its first president.

Anwar entered mainstream politics in 1982 and rose rapidly, serving as Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Education, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

His journey to the premiership would take several more decades and include political dismissal, imprisonment, opposition leadership and a dramatic political comeback.

In November 2022, more than 50 years after his university activism began, Anwar was sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister.

Universiti Malaya Produced The Most Prime Ministers

The educational backgrounds of Malaysia’s Prime Ministers stretch from Cambridge and Nottingham to Universiti Malaya, Raffles College, the Indian Military Academy and Lincoln’s Inn.

Their fields of study were equally varied, covering law, medicine, economics, Islamic studies and Malay studies.

Among all these institutions, however, Universiti Malaya stands out. It is officially associated with five of the nine individuals who have served as Malaysia’s Prime Minister, more than any other university.
