The Market Development Grant (MDG) could be the opportunity Malaysian businesses need to take their products beyond the local market, with eligible SMEs and exporters able to claim up to RM300,000 in lifetime assistance.
From joining international exhibitions to meeting potential buyers and introducing products in new markets, expanding overseas can open major opportunities. But it can also come with significant costs that many smaller businesses struggle to afford.
This is where the Market Development Grant (MDG) can make a difference. The reimbursable grant helps eligible Malaysian businesses reduce selected export promotion expenses and take their first, or next, step into the global market.

What Is The Market Development Grant (MDG)?
Introduced in 2002, the Market Development Grant (MDG) is managed by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, better known as MATRADE.
The initiative was created to help Malaysian exporters promote locally made products and services in international markets.
Unlike a business loan, the assistance does not need to be repaid. However, the Market Development Grant (MDG) operates on a reimbursement basis.
This means businesses generally need to pay for eligible expenses first before submitting a claim to MATRADE. Any reimbursement approved is also subject to the availability of government funds.
Each eligible applicant may claim up to a lifetime limit of RM300,000, depending on the activities undertaken, eligible expenses, supporting documents and MATRADE’s approval.
What Business Activities Can Be Claimed?
The Market Development Grant (MDG) covers several activities designed to help Malaysian businesses connect with international buyers and enter new markets.
Eligible physical activities include participation in international trade fairs and exhibitions held in Malaysia or overseas. Businesses may also claim eligible expenses related to Trade and Investment Missions or Export Acceleration Missions.
The grant also supports participation in international conferences held overseas and selected listing fees for Made-in-Malaysia products in supermarkets, hypermarkets, retail centres or boutique outlets abroad.
Virtual activities are included too. These cover participation in virtual international trade fairs and eligible business-to-business meetings conducted as part of virtual trade missions or export acceleration programmes.
This makes the grant relevant not only to companies selling physical products, but also to Malaysian businesses offering professional expertise and exportable services.
Who Can Apply For The Market Development Grant (MDG)?
The Market Development Grant (MDG) is open to several categories of Malaysian businesses and organisations.

Eligible applicants include Malaysian SMEs, professional service providers operating as sole proprietors or partnerships, trade and industry associations, chambers of commerce, professional bodies and cooperatives.
However, being part of one of these categories does not automatically guarantee approval. Applicants must still fulfil the latest eligibility conditions and documentation requirements under MATRADE’s official guidelines.
Businesses should therefore review the current requirements before committing money to an event or overseas activity.
Claims Must Be Submitted Within 30 Days
One of the most important conditions under the Market Development Grant (MDG) is the submission deadline.
For international trade fairs, exhibitions, Trade and Investment Missions, Export Acceleration Missions and overseas conferences, applications for reimbursement generally need to be submitted within 30 calendar days after the final day of the event.
For overseas retail listing fees, the application must generally be submitted within 30 calendar days from the first day of listing.
The same 30-day timeline applies to eligible virtual exhibitions and business-to-business meetings, calculated from the final day of the relevant promotional activity.
Missing this deadline could affect a company’s ability to claim its expenses, even if the activity itself qualifies.
How To Apply For The Market Development Grant (MDG)

Applications for the Market Development Grant (MDG) is now accessible through the MADANI Digital Trade Platform.
Applicants must first visit the platform and select “Explore Virtual Showcase.” Existing users can sign in, while new users will need to register an account.
They can then access the application section through the MATRADE Member Portal, complete the required information and upload the supporting documents. After submission, applicants can monitor their application status digitally through the platform.
Businesses should keep invoices, receipts, payment records and documents proving their participation in the relevant export activity.
Complete records are particularly important because the grant is provided through reimbursement rather than as an upfront payment.
A Valuable Opportunity For Export-Ready SMEs
Entering an overseas market often requires more than having a good product. Businesses may need to attend exhibitions, build relationships with distributors, meet potential buyers and invest in getting their products onto international shelves.
These activities can be expensive, especially for smaller companies with limited cash flow.
The Market Development Grant (MDG) can reduce some of that financial pressure by supporting eligible businesses throughout their export journey.
However, companies must remember that RM300,000 is a lifetime claim limit, not an automatic upfront payment. Approval depends on eligibility, the type of activity, proper documentation, compliance with submission deadlines and the availability of government funds.
Malaysian business owners interested in applying can review the latest requirements on the official MATRADE website.
