Malaysia’s coffee industry has achieved a historic milestone after barista Nas Jaafar became the country’s first-ever winner of the 2026 World Brewers Cup, one of the most prestigious competitions in the global specialty coffee scene.

The World Coffee Championships officially announced Nas as the champion after he outperformed finalists from Australia, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic, South Korea and France in a closely contested final round.

His victory is being celebrated as a breakthrough moment that could place Malaysia’s coffee industry firmly on the international map.

Nas Jaafar Makes History

Nas, 38, is a husband and father of two daughters. His journey in coffee began in 2014, where he worked his way up from front-of-house positions before eventually becoming the Southeast Asia Specialty Sales Representative for Falcon Coffees (Asia).

His competitive journey started in 2019 when he entered the Malaysia Barista Championship.

Initially, competition was simply a way for him to sharpen his skills and deepen his knowledge of coffee. However, his purpose evolved over time.

“Initially, I competed to improve my skills and knowledge. As time goes by, now I’m competing not just to go through the learning curve, but also to inspire others and contribute back to the community,” said Nas.

That mission has now culminated in one of the biggest achievements any Malaysian coffee professional has ever attained.

How The World Coffee Competition Tests The Best

The World Brewers Cup is regarded as one of the most prestigious competitions in specialty coffee, celebrating excellence in manual brewing, sensory evaluation and presentation.

Competitors are judged on brewing precision, consistency, cup quality and their ability to communicate the sensory profile and story behind their brew.

This year’s final rankings were:

  1. Nas Jaafar, Malaysia
  2. Simon Gautherin, Australia
  3. Bavis Kwong, Hong Kong SAR
  4. Jackie Tran, Czech Republic
  5. Ethan Junseong Park, South Korea
  6. Angie Molina, France

By finishing ahead of some of the world’s best brewers, Nas became the first Malaysian ever to lift the coveted title.

Malaysia’s Coffee Community Celebrates A Landmark Victory

Following his victory, Nas thanked the people who supported him throughout his journey.

“First, I would love to thank God for all the opportunities and the journey so far.”

He also paid tribute to his family and team.

“My wife for being there with the kids while I’m not around.”

Nas further acknowledged his parents, coach Jhon Christhoper from Fugol Coffee Roaster, his assistant Shaf from Peace RSVP, his colleagues at Falcon Coffees, and the entire Malaysian specialty coffee community.

Industry players believe the victory could inspire more young Malaysians to pursue careers in specialty coffee while elevating standards in brewing precision, sensory training and coffee education.

Over the past decade, Malaysia has seen rapid growth in independent cafés, micro-roasters and barista training programmes. However, the local coffee industry has often been overshadowed by larger regional markets.

Nas’ historic triumph is expected to bring greater international recognition to Malaysian talent and showcase Malaysia’s growing influence in specialty coffee.
