Semak Kasih: A New BNM Portal To Help You Find Unclaimed Insurance

Thousands of Malaysians may have unclaimed insurance or takaful benefits waiting for them without even realising it. To address this issue, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has introduced the Semak Kasih portal, a new online platform that allows beneficiaries to check whether their deceased family members left behind insurance policies or takaful certificates that have yet to be claimed.

The portal was developed jointly by the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) and the Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM) under the supervision of BNM. It serves as a one-stop platform, eliminating the need for beneficiaries to contact multiple insurance and takaful providers individually.

Around 50,000 Death Benefits Still Remain Unclaimed

BNM Deputy Governor, Adnan Zaylani Mohamad Zahid, said insurance and takaful protection should not be taken lightly as they can provide vital financial assistance during difficult times, including helping families manage medical expenses, accidents, and fire-related losses.

He noted that many families remain unaware that their loved ones had purchased insurance or takaful protection for their welfare.

According to estimates by MTA and LIAM, approximately 50,000 insurance policies and takaful certificates involving death benefits remain unclaimed by beneficiaries in Malaysia.

“Various efforts have been undertaken by insurance and takaful companies, including sending letters and using agents to contact beneficiaries,” he said.

How To Use The Semak Kasih Portal

The Semak Kasih portal is provided free of charge and is designed to simplify the process of locating unclaimed benefits.

Step 1: Register An Account

Create an account on the Semak Kasih portal using your:

  • Full name
  • Identification number (MyKad or other identification document)
  • Email address
  • Mobile phone number

Step 2: Log In To Your Account

Once your registration is successful, log in to access the service.

Step 3: Submit An Enquiry

Prepare and submit the following information:

  • Identification number (MyKad or other identification document) of the deceased person
  • Death certificate number
  • A copy of the death certificate for upload

What Happens Next?

If a matching record is found, users will receive a list of the relevant takaful operators or life insurance companies together with their contact details.

Beneficiaries are then required to contact the listed takaful operator or insurance company to obtain further assistance and begin the claims process.

However, BNM noted that a matching record does not necessarily mean that a family takaful or life insurance claim is payable at that stage, as additional verification and assessment may still be required.

If no matching record is found, the message “No record found” will be displayed on the screen.

Semak Kasih: Helping Families Access Benefits They May Not Know Exist

Adnan said the new portal was introduced to improve the efficiency of benefit payments and make it easier for beneficiaries to determine whether coverage exists and contact the relevant provider for further action.

The launch of Semak Kasih also reflects the close collaboration between BNM, MTA, and LIAM to strengthen consumer empowerment, improve financial inclusion, and make financial protection benefits more accessible to Malaysians.

Ultimately, the initiative aims to ensure that insurance and takaful benefits reach the families who are rightfully entitled to them, providing much-needed financial support during difficult times.
