For decades, Tan Sri Vincent Tan and Tan Sri Danny Tan Chee Sing have been among the most influential names in Malaysian business. Vincent built a diversified empire through Berjaya, while Danny transformed Tropicana into a leading property developer known for its lifestyle-focused townships.
Today, the brothers are worth a combined US$1.79 billion (approximately RM7 billion), according to the latest Forbes Malaysia’s 50 Richest 2026 list, cementing their place among Malaysia’s wealthiest business families.
In the Forbes Malaysia’s 50 Richest 2026 ranking, Vincent Tan was listed as Malaysia’s 29th richest individual with a net worth of US$940 million (approximately RM3.7 billion). Meanwhile, Danny Tan ranked 32nd with a net worth of US$850 million (approximately RM3.3 billion).
The ranking comes amid a strong year for Malaysian tycoons, with the combined wealth of the country’s 50 richest individuals rising nearly 30% to US$116 billion (about RM459 billion), up from US$90 billion a year earlier.
Vincent Tan: From Bank Clerk To Billionaire

Today, Vincent Tan is widely regarded as one of Malaysia’s most successful self-made entrepreneurs. However, his business journey began modestly.
According to Forbes, he started working as a bank clerk at the age of 17 before moving into life insurance sales. His major breakthrough came in 1980, when he secured the rights to operate the McDonald’s franchise in Malaysia, a move that laid the foundation for what would eventually become the Berjaya Group.
Over the following decades, Vincent expanded aggressively into multiple sectors, including retail, gaming, telecommunications, hospitality, financial services, and property development.
Today, his wealth is linked to interests in Berjaya Corporation, 7-Eleven Malaysia, U Mobile, as well as various property, hospitality, and financial services ventures.
Although he stepped down as Berjaya Corporation chairman in 2023, he continues to serve as an adviser to the board and remains one of Malaysia’s most influential corporate figures.
Danny Tan And The Rise Of Tropicana

While Vincent built a diversified conglomerate, Danny Tan focused on transforming Malaysia’s property landscape.
Danny founded Dijaya Corporation Berhad in 1979, which later became Tropicana Corporation Berhad.
His defining achievement came with the development of Tropicana Golf & Country Resort in Petaling Jaya.
The project is widely regarded as one of Malaysia’s earliest and most successful resort-style gated townships, helping to redefine premium residential living.
The success of Tropicana paved the way for numerous large-scale developments across the country.
Today, the company oversees more than 50 completed and ongoing projects, with landholdings exceeding 2,500 acres and an estimated gross development value (GDV) of more than RM50 billion.
Before The Billions
Long before they became billionaires, the Tan brothers developed their entrepreneurial skills through a series of small ventures. Among their earliest businesses was the insurance industry, where they worked as agents before seeking bigger opportunities in the reconditioned vehicle trade.
Their entrepreneurial drive eventually helped them secure a dealership from Hino to sell heavy vehicles and machinery. By 1980, they had expanded further and become dealers for both Toyota and Proton vehicles.
The brothers later entered the property sector, developing condominiums, shophouses, and mixed housing projects. Eventually, Danny branched out on his own at the age of 35, laying the foundations for what would become the Tropicana empire.
These early ventures provided the experience, capital, and business instincts that would later help both brothers build billion-ringgit enterprises.
A Family Legacy That Shaped Multiple Industries
Few families have had as much influence on Malaysia’s corporate landscape as the Tan family.
Through Berjaya, Vincent Tan built a business empire spanning retail, gaming, telecommunications, hospitality, property, and financial services. Meanwhile, Danny Tan helped transform Malaysia’s property sector through Tropicana, introducing resort-style township developments that changed the way many Malaysians viewed modern living.
Today, their combined wealth of approximately RM7 billion is more than just a measure of financial success. It reflects decades of entrepreneurship, strategic risk-taking, and the ability to adapt and grow across changing business environments.
Together, the Tan brothers have built a powerful family business legacy, leaving a lasting impact across multiple industries and helping shape Malaysia’s modern corporate landscape.
