The launch of Perodua’s first-ever electric vehicle, the QV-E, became more than a technical milestone. It felt like a national awakening, a moment when Malaysia stepped confidently into its electric future powered not by imported brilliance, but by homegrown vision, talent and determination.
At the heart of this breakthrough is Chok Jia Jiunn, a 44-year-old visionary from Rawang whose leadership is helping reshape Malaysia’s place in the global automotive landscape.
The Birth of the QV-E

Chok’s role as chief engineer of the QV-E project reflects the depth of local Malaysian talent. Speaking to Bernama at the launch, he shared the belief that has driven his entire journey. “I have always believed Malaysia has the talent and capability to succeed. My motivation comes from the desire to create something that not only meets automotive standards but also reflects the innovation and needs of Malaysians.”
“Designed by Malaysians for Malaysian needs, I wanted to show that local talent can create something the nation can be proud of.”
Supporting him was a team of more than 100 young Malaysian engineers and researchers aged between 25 and 40. They came from different disciplines, from electronics and safety evaluation to interior design and internal and external research.
This diverse collaboration ensured that every step, from early sketches to the final prototype, was shaped around how Malaysians actually drive and live.
“Every team member worked closely to ensure smooth progress, from ideas to prototypes, and finally to the completed product tailored for local needs,”Chok explained,
Engineering the QV-E for Malaysian Life

Work on the QV-E began in September 2023, starting with a detailed study of Malaysian consumers. The findings were clear. Drivers wanted a car that felt dynamic yet spacious, practical yet premium, and familiar enough that the jump to electric technology would not feel overwhelming.
For Chok, helping Malaysians transition comfortably into EV ownership became a central priority. He knew that first-time EV buyers needed reassurance, not complication.
“Our goal was to ensure that new EV users feel like they are driving a normal car, even though it’s electric. Every aspect is designed for a smooth and comfortable driving experience.”
This philosophy inspired one of the QV-E’s most innovative decisions: a battery positioned for easy replacement within just 30 minutes under warranty. It was a simple yet groundbreaking step that addressed one of the biggest worries among new EV owners.
A Futuristic, Smart and Proudly Local Creation

The QV-E carries a smart digital system that allows drivers to switch effortlessly between normal and sport modes. Its futuristic design modernises Perodua’s look while still maintaining the familiar warmth and usability Malaysians expect. It is bold without being intimidating, stylish without losing practicality.
To Chok, the QV-E is far more than an electric car. It represents Malaysian talent at its finest.
“We hope Malaysians feel proud because this product is created by our own people for our own country. This is proof that, when given the opportunity and trust, local teams can produce something extraordinary.”
He also expressed his appreciation to Perodua CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, who trusted him to lead the development of the project.
A Launch That Signifies More Than a Car
The QV-E’s unveiling, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was filled with pride. The prime minister acknowledged “the expertise, discipline, effort, and perseverance of local talents” who brought the QV-E to life.
Priced at RM80,000 excluding insurance or battery, the model will soon be available to the public and marks Perodua’s major entry into the EV segment.
More than its specifications or price tag, the QV-E represents Malaysia’s confidence in its own capabilities. It is a reflection of what can happen when local minds are trusted, supported and given space to innovate. For Chok, the journey has been a personal mission as much as it is a professional achievement. For the country, the QV-E signals a new era, one where Malaysia is not simply catching up to global trends, but proving that it can lead with originality, confidence and the strength of its own people.
