Melaka added another glittering name to its history when Fan Bingbing was conferred the Darjah Pangkuan Seri Melaka (DPSM), carrying the title Datuk. The acclaimed actress, known globally for X-Men: Days of Future Past and I Am Not Madame Bovary, walked gracefully into the halls of Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh, to receive the state’s distinguished honour.
For Fan, it was more than an accolade. She described it as “a precious gift”, a recognition she treasures deeply.

Why Fan Bingbing Was Chosen
Her new title carries weight not only because of who she is, but also because of what she has achieved for Melaka. In May last year, Fan Bingbing was appointed as the Tourism Ambassador of Melaka. What followed was remarkable.
Within only three months, her influence rippled across China’s vast digital platforms, generating more than 1.2 billion searches. Out of these, the name “Melaka” alone recorded over 445 million searches, a digital milestone never before reached by the state.

In fact, over the course of just two days last year, on June 14 and 15, the number of searches for “Melaka” on WeChat exploded, reaching a staggering total of over 300 million searches.
This wave of attention translated into real-world results. Visitor arrivals, particularly from China, rose sharply, from 204,818 to 664,687, showing that Fan’s influence had moved beyond the screen and into the tourism economy. According to Melaka’s Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusof, the Datukship is a tribute to her role in elevating Melaka as a world-class tourism destination, a contribution the state values deeply.
In the Company of Icons

Her honour places her alongside a distinguished circle of international figures who have received similar recognition in Malaysia. Over a decade ago, Datuk Shah Rukh Khan was conferred an honorary title in Melaka after filming there, drawing immense attention from fans across South Asia. Later, Datuk Jackie Chan was recognised for his efforts in shining the global spotlight on Malaysia.
Now, Fan Bingbing stands with these icons, a trio of stars whose influence stretches far beyond cinema into the realms of culture, diplomacy, and national pride. Their legacies demonstrate how celebrity power can serve as an unexpected but powerful bridge between nations.
Datuk Fan Bingbing: A Star with Growing Roots in Malaysia
Her title also comes at a time when her ties to Malaysia feel stronger than ever. Recently, she attended a tea event at The Ritz-Carlton Kuala Lumpur, where her presence once again drew admiration. She is preparing to launch her beauty products at The Exchange TRX, one of Malaysia’s most prestigious retail destinations.
Soon, Fan will also appear in Mother Bhumi, a multilingual film directed by Malaysian filmmaker Chong Keat Aun, whose works have already won international acclaim. This shows that her relationship with Malaysia is not symbolic, but tangible, visible, and expanding into both culture and commerce.
More Than a Ceremony

The grandeur of the ceremony at Seri Negeri was not only about tradition or formality. It was about acknowledging a new kind of influence. Fan Bingbing’s reach is vast, her presence magnetic, and her ability to turn attention into action undeniable. For Melaka, her Datukship is a way of harnessing that power to tell the story of a city whose heritage has always been global.
For Fan herself, the honour marks a new dimension in her career. Beyond acting and fashion, she now carries the responsibility of being Datuk Fan Bingbing, a role that places her within Melaka’s legacy and offers her the opportunity to continue shaping how the world sees the state.
