For many Malaysians, becoming a cabin crew member is more than just a job, it’s a dream. The profession offers the thrill of travel, cultural exposure, and a dynamic work environment. But beyond the glamorous image lies a practical question: how much does a cabin crew member actually earn in Malaysia?

According to majikan.my, cabin crew salaries vary significantly across local airlines. While international airlines often dominate the conversation with their high tax-free salaries, Malaysia’s homegrown carriers offer competitive packages, especially when allowances and flying hours are taken into account.

Cabin Crew Salary in Malaysia

AirAsia

AirAsia is one of the most popular starting points for aspiring cabin crew in Malaysia. The airline offers a base salary ranging from RM1,936 to RM2,500 per month, depending on experience and role. However, this is only part of the story.

What makes AirAsia attractive is the variety of allowances that boost take-home income. Cabin crew members receive flying hour incentives and meal allowances, which can significantly increase monthly earnings, especially for those flying frequently. While junior crew may start on the lower end of the scale, more senior crew can realistically earn RM4,000 to RM6,000 per month or more, depending on their flight schedules.

Malaysia Airlines

As the national carrier, Malaysia Airlines offers one of the most structured and competitive salary packages for cabin crew in the country. The base salary ranges from RM2,500 to RM4,000 per month, with higher starting pay for those with prior experience or relevant qualifications.

Malaysia Airlines also provides additional allowances, including flying hours, layover compensation, and international route bonuses. These extras are particularly beneficial for crew assigned to long-haul flights, where layovers are more frequent. With all allowances included, monthly earnings for experienced crew can range from RM5,000 to RM7,000 or more, especially for those in supervisory roles.

Batik Air

Formerly known as Malindo Air, Batik Air offers a base salary between RM2,000 and RM3,500 per month. This range reflects variations in rank and experience, and while the allowances are not as widely publicised as those of other airlines, crew members still receive standard flying hour and meal incentives.

Batik Air operates a mix of domestic and regional flights, which can affect the frequency and value of layover allowances. However, the airline is seen as a good option for cabin crew looking to build their experience with a full-service carrier.

Firefly

Firefly operates as a community airline and offers a different pay structure from larger carriers. The base salary starts at approximately RM1,000 per month, which may seem modest at first glance. However, the airline compensates this with a flying hour rate of RM27 per hour, and RM32 per hour for senior crew.

This means that total monthly earnings can vary greatly depending on flight frequency. Cabin crew who fly often can bring home RM4,000 to RM6,000 or more, especially during high-demand seasons. Firefly’s model rewards productivity and is particularly suited for those who are flexible with their schedules.

Entry-Level and Senior Crew Comparison

Across all these airlines, entry-level cabin crew typically earn between RM2,000 and RM4,000 per month, inclusive of basic allowances. As they gain seniority and take on more responsibilities, such as becoming in-flight supervisors or cabin leaders, monthly salaries can rise to RM7,000 or higher, especially when combined with performance bonuses and regular flying schedules.

Is Cabin Crew a Good Career in Malaysia?

In addition to base salary and flying hours, allowances for layovers, uniforms, and meals can significantly boost total income. Airlines also differ in their training bond policies. For example, Malaysia Airlines has previously required cabin crew to sign a RM20,000 bond, which must be repaid if the employee resigns before completing a specified contract term.

Despite the challenges such as irregular hours and time away from family, cabin crew remains a desirable career for those who value travel, interpersonal skills, and dynamic work. While Malaysian airlines may not offer tax-free salaries like some international carriers, they provide a stable and competitive income with clear paths for progression. Many cabin crew go on to become supervisors, trainers, or move into corporate roles within the aviation industry.

Being a cabin crew member in Malaysia offers more than just financial stability. It is a lifestyle, one that comes with rewards, challenges, and endless stories to tell. Local airlines like AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air, and Firefly may offer different pay scales and benefits, but all provide valuable experience and opportunities for growth. For those passionate about aviation and service, this career still holds strong promise in 2025.
