Tengku Dato’ Setia Ramli Alhaj has been named the Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1447 for Selangor in recognition of his tireless contributions to the empowerment of Islamic endowments (waqf), charitable giving (infaq), and the advancement of Islamic education.

The announcement was made during the Ambang Hijrah and Maal Hijrah Celebration for Selangor, held last night in Shah Alam. Present at the event were Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, the Menteri Besar of Selangor, who presented the award, and Datuk Mohd. Shahzihan Ahmad, Director of the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS).
Datuk Mohd. Shahzihan praised Tengku Ramli as a visionary figure whose commitment to Islamic values and community service has strengthened the role of Majlis Agama Islam Selangor (MAIS) amidst Selangor’s complex and diverse social-political landscape.
“He is directly involved in championing and promoting Islamic values through the empowerment of waqf and infaq. His leadership has elevated the stature of MAIS in navigating the challenges of a plural society,” Shahzihan said.
Beyond his involvement in religious institutions, Tengku Ramli has also played a vital role in cultural preservation and education. He has led initiatives through the Galeri Diraja, promoting Islamic heritage and values, and has contributed his expertise to NGOs, zakat institutions, and educational platforms.
Tengku Ramli currently serves as a member of the Selangor Royal Council, a board member of the Selangor Waqf Corporation, and sits on the committee of the Tabung Infaq Jariah Umat Islam Selangor (TIJARI), representing the Sultan of Selangor.
“For 16 years, he has been a committed member of MAIS, using his position to advise on key policies concerning the administration of Islamic affairs in the state,” Shahzihan added.

Tengku Ramli, now 82, is widely respected for his integrity and leadership. He is known for his lifelong dedication to public service, religion, and the state, earning him admiration across both religious and corporate spheres, nationally and internationally.
From 1982 to 2008, he served as Executive Director and Managing Director of I&P Group Sdn. Bhd., contributing significantly to the property development sector.
In recognition of his cultural and heritage work, Tengku Ramli was previously awarded the titles of Tokoh Warisan and Tokoh Khas Warisan Selangor in 2003 and 2015 respectively. In 2018, he was also honoured by an international NGO for his efforts in Islamic cultural diplomacy.
The Maal Hijrah celebration this year saw the Chairman of MAIS, Datuk Salehuddin Saidin, representing the Sultan of Selangor, alongside key dignitaries including Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.
