When most people think of farming, they imagine backbreaking work, unpredictable weather, and ageing landowners in rubber boots. But that image is long overdue for an upgrade. Today, agriculture is no longer just about tradition, it’s about opportunity. And the Young Agropreneur Program, led by Malaysia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, is giving young Malaysians the chance to lead this transformation.
This is not just about growing crops. It’s about building businesses, viable, sustainable, and scalable ones. If you’re between the ages of 18 and 45 and have ever dreamed of turning a piece of land, a fish pond, or even a home-based kitchen into a full-fledged agro business, this program was made for you.
What Is the Young Agropreneur Program?

The Young Agropreneur Program is a national initiative that aims to support and empower youth in Malaysia to become agropreneurs, individuals who venture into agro-based entrepreneurship.
The program focuses on the entire agriculture value chain, from primary production (like planting, livestock and fisheries) to downstream processing (such as food-based industries). It’s part of a long-term strategy to make farming more appealing, modern, and income-generating for the next generation.
By shifting the perception of agriculture from a traditional livelihood to a forward-looking industry, the program hopes to cultivate a new class of agropreneurs who are skilled, well-equipped, and ready to compete in a rapidly changing economy.
What Types of Support Are Available?
One of the biggest benefits of joining the program is access to funding in the form of grants and tools, not loans. Here’s what’s available:
Start-Up Grant
For those just starting out, the Start-Up Grant offers:
- Up to RM30,000 in equipment and resources for upstream agriculture projects such as crop farming, livestock rearing, or aquaculture.
- Up to RM20,000 for agro-based food production such as processing, packaging, or small-scale food manufacturing.
This is ideal for individuals looking to reduce financial burdens in the early stages of their agropreneur journey.
Scale-Up Grant
If you’re already running a project and want to expand, the Scale-Up Grant offers:
- Up to RM50,000 in support for purchasing agrotechnology, machinery, and automation systems.
- This is specifically for existing agropreneurs who previously received the Start-Up Grant and now want to take their business to the next level.
Second Chance Grant
For those whose projects were disrupted by natural disasters or unforeseen challenges, the Second Chance Grant provides up to RM20,000 to help resume operations.
These grants are delivered in kind, meaning applicants receive tools, machinery, or infrastructure support instead of direct cash payouts.
What Else Is Offered Besides Funding?
The Young Agropreneur Program goes beyond financial support. It also provides access to technical training and mentorship. Participants benefit from:
- Tailored guidance based on their project type
- Support from trained personnel and government agencies
- Ongoing capacity-building programs scheduled at the state level
This ensures that every agropreneur is equipped with the knowledge and skills to run their business effectively and sustainably.
Who Can Apply?
To qualify for the program, applicants must meet the following basic criteria:
- Be a Malaysian citizen
- Aged between 18 and 45 years
- Able to read, write, and count
- Have access to land, a project site, or business premises
- Must be registered or planning to register with SSM or have a relevant business license
For the Start-Up Grant:
- Age 18–43
- Must have a monthly net income of less than RM5,000
- Required to undergo technical training (with exemptions for those with recognised agriculture qualifications or experience)
For the Scale-Up Grant:
- Age 21–45
- Must have a monthly net income of more than RM5,000
- Must be an existing recipient of the Start-Up Grant running an upstream agriculture project
