Malaysian filmmaker Syafiq Yusof has come a long way since nearly giving up on his directing dreams. Today, his latest action thriller, Blood Brothers: Bara Naga, has scorched the local box office, passing RM50 million in just 14 days of screening nationwide. But behind this roaring success lies a story of early setbacks, family mentorship, and relentless determination.
A Humble Beginning

Born on 7 December 1992 in Kuala Lumpur, Mohd Syafiq bin Mohd Yusof grew up in a household steeped in film. His father, Dato’ Yusof Haslam, is a respected producer-director, and his elder brother, Syamsul Yusof, is an award-winning filmmaker in his own right. Syafiq’s very first steps before the camera were small acting roles in hit TV dramas like Gerak Khas and Roda-Roda Kuala Lumpur.
The Setback That Almost Ended It All
Success, however, was not immediate. In a candid TikTok video, Syafiq admitted that his first film flopped financially. “We earned RM1.8 million at the box office,” he explained, “but after deductions for industry fees and taxes, we were actually at a loss. I felt so disappointed, I thought about quitting directing altogether.”
That moment of doubt could have derailed his career, yet it became the catalyst for his growth.
Learning from the Family

Rather than walk away, Syafiq sought counsel from his father and brother, tapping into years of hard-won industry wisdom. From his father, he learned the nuts and bolts of budgeting, scheduling and navigating Malaysia’s sometimes labyrinthine production regulations. From his brother, he absorbed the value of narrative courage—how to experiment with new genres, to bend the camera’s eye into fresh forms and to trust an audience’s appetite for bold storytelling.
“You’ll always see a hint of their styles in my work,” Syafiq reflects, “but they also pushed me to find my own voice.”
Armed with fresh insight, he returned to the director’s chair with renewed confidence, and a willingness to take bigger creative risks.
Steady Rise Through Genre-Bending Hits
Armed with lessons in resilience and craft, Syafiq returned to directing with renewed purpose and quickly unveiled a string of crowd-pleasers that showcased his versatility. He first leapt into action-comedy with Abang Long Fadil in 2014, a slick, charm-driven romp whose 2017 sequel not only cemented his knack for kinetic choreography and charismatic leads but also clinched the Filem Box Office award at the 29th Festival Filem Malaysia.
In between, he ventured into darker territory with Villa Nabila (2015) and Desolasi (2016), the latter earning him Pengarah Terbaik at Anugerah PROFIMA for its masterful tension and psychological depth. His genre-bending streak continued with the high-octane police drama Polis Evo 3 in 2023, which raked in RM50 million, and the gritty crime thriller Sheriff: Narko Integriti in 2024, amassing over RM64 million in just 23 days.
Each success further cemented his reputation as a director who could blend commercial appeal with creative flair.
Blood Brothers: Bara Naga

Released on 10 April 2025, Blood Brothers: Bara Naga is Syafiq’s most ambitious project yet, co-directed with Abhilash Chandra and produced by Skop Productions in collaboration with Primeworks Studios. With a budget of RM7 million, the film quickly:
- Surpassed its budget within two days.
- Hit RM29.9 million by the end of its first week.
- Crossed the RM50 million mark in just 14 days, thanks in part to a viral opening sequence that had audiences returning just to relive those first adrenaline-fuelled minutes.
Audiences have praised its stunning visuals, immersive sound design, and emotionally charged storytelling; experiences they say can only be fully appreciated on the big screen.
Looking Ahead
What began as a rocky start has blossomed into an inspiring career for Syafiq Yusof. He’s taken lessons learned from his father and brother, mixed them with his own ideas, and crafted a unique style that resonates with Malaysians. His films set the bar higher each time, inviting us into worlds of suspense, laughter, and surprise. The future looks bright for this filmmaker, and cinema lovers everywhere will be watching eagerly for his next adventure.
