Used cars are becoming more popular than ever, and savvy buyers are zeroing in on a handful of trusted models. Thanks to a growing preference for affordability, practicality, and fuel efficiency, a few familiar names dominated the used car market last year.

Whether you’re a student looking for your first car, a family needing a dependable ride, or someone earning extra cash through ride-hailing, these top five used cars, ranked by Carsome, are tried, tested, and beloved across the country.

Perodua Myvi – Still the King of the Road

The Perodua Myvi isn’t just a car, it’s practically a national icon. Since its launch in 2005, it has consistently held its place as Malaysia’s favourite ride. The third-generation Myvi blends compact convenience with modern safety and technology, making it perfect for both city traffic and family use.

With engine options of 1.3L and 1.5L, paired with automatic transmission, the Myvi is built for efficiency and ease of use. It boasts advanced safety features like six airbags, hill start assist, and Advanced Safety Assist (ASA), earning a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.

Owners love the Myvi for its low maintenance costs, great fuel economy, and surprisingly spacious interior. It’s small enough to zip through tight urban streets, yet roomy enough to handle groceries, passengers, and even weekend trips. No wonder Malaysians affectionately call it the “King of the Road.”

Perodua Bezza – The Ride-Hailing Hero

The Perodua Bezza, launched in 2016, has quickly become a go-to sedan for Malaysians looking for practicality on a budget. Its reputation for low fuel consumption—up to 22 km per litre, and minimal upkeep costs makes it especially attractive to Grab drivers and small families.

Available with either a 1.0L or 1.3L engine, and both manual and automatic transmissions, the Bezza is designed with daily use in mind. It also comes with safety features like dual airbags, ABS, and vehicle stability control, with higher variants offering smart entry and reverse cameras.

The car’s boot space is among the largest in its class, making it ideal for everything from airport pickups to balik kampung trips. For anyone who wants a fuss-free sedan that gets the job done, the Bezza is hard to beat.

Used Perodua Bezza prices depend on the model year, variant, mileage, and condition. For example, the Perodua Bezza 1.0 G Manual ranges from RM23,000 to RM34,000, while the 1.3 AV variant ranges from RM34,000 to RM48,000.

Honda City – The Affordable Premium Sedan

For buyers who want a step up in comfort and style, the Honda City is the ideal blend of refinement and reliability. A staple in Malaysia since 2001, it’s especially popular among young professionals and families looking for a more premium experience at a reasonable price.

The sixth-generation model features a 1.5L i-VTEC engine paired with a CVT transmission, delivering smooth acceleration and impressive fuel economy. The hybrid variant takes it even further, offering over 27 km per litre, making it perfect for eco-conscious drivers.

Safety features like ABS, brake assist, Isofix mounts, and up to six airbags give added peace of mind, while the interior offers generous space and comfort. If you’re after a sedan that offers a little more luxury without the big price tag, the City is a standout.

Proton Saga – The Reliable Malaysian Classic

The Proton Saga has been a pillar of Malaysian automotive history since 1985, and it still holds its own in the used cars market. Known for its rugged simplicity, easy repairs, and low cost of ownership, the Saga is often the first choice for first-time buyers.

The latest models run on a 1.3L engine, available in both manual and automatic variants. It boasts a 420-litre boot and a clean, functional cabin. Safety updates include ABS, electronic brake assist, traction stability control, and hill start assist, earning it a 4-star ASEAN NCAP rating.

For those who need a dependable daily car without breaking the bank, the Saga continues to deliver value where it matters most.

Toyota Vios – Built to Last

The Toyota Vios is one of those cars that just won’t quit—and that’s exactly why Malaysians love it. First introduced in 2003, it has built a solid reputation for long-term durability, fuel efficiency, and ease of maintenance.

Post-2016 models come equipped with a 1.5L engine and CVT transmission, offering a smooth and responsive driving experience. It’s also packed with safety features, including seven airbags, vehicle stability control, ABS with EBD, brake assist, and Isofix seat anchors.

Its strong resale value and wide availability of parts make the Vios an excellent investment for long-term ownership. Whether you’re commuting or heading out for a long drive, the Vios provides comfort, performance, and peace of mind.

What’s Fueling the Used Car Boom?

The surge in used car popularity isn’t a fluke; it’s a result of shifting lifestyles and smarter buying decisions. Rising living costs, the appeal of ride-hailing income, and the rising cost of new cars have pushed more Malaysians toward quality second-hand vehicles.

According to analysts, sedans and hatchbacks account for about 66% of used car sales, with the most in-demand price range falling between RM30,000–RM50,000. Petrol-powered vehicles still dominate, making up 81% of sales, though hybrid interest is on the rise. Online platforms like Carsome and MyTukar are also helping people shop for used cars with ease, thanks to digital inspections, financing options, and doorstep delivery.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, the used car market is expected to grow even further as Malaysians continue to value affordability, flexibility, and convenience. The adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles will slowly pick up pace as infrastructure improves and government incentives kick in. At the same time, advancements like AI vehicle evaluations and 360-degree virtual tours will continue to improve the digital car-buying experience.
