For those who frequently travel between the East Coast and the capital city, Sani Express is a familiar name. This express bus service has become the top choice for travelers seeking a comfortable and safe journey home. However, behind this well-known brand lies an extraordinary story of its founder, Dato’ Wan Mohammad Sani Salleh.
From the Entertainment Stage to the Business World

Born on July 24, 1976, in Kuala Ibai, Terengganu, Dato’ Sani is the fourth of six siblings. Holding a Diploma in Business Management from Sunway College, his journey was unconventional compared to most entrepreneurs. Before becoming a businessman, he first made a name for himself in the entertainment industry as a model and singer in the group Impression, alongside Norman Hakim and Eizlan Yusoff in the late 1990s.

However, realizing the challenges and uncertainties in the entertainment world, he decided to change his path. He wanted to build a legacy in a more stable field that would make a significant impact on many people. This decision eventually led to the establishment of Sani Express.
Challenges and Determination
Before founding Sani Express, he started his business by opening a vehicle repair workshop. In 2003, he established Sani United Sdn Bhd with two business partners, who later withdrew, leaving him to manage the company alone.
The biggest challenge? Capital. He owned six buses but struggled to afford fuel for operations. However, with perseverance and a clear vision, he continued striving to realize his dream. Finally, in 2006, Sani Express commenced operations with 15 buses serving major routes to Kuala Terengganu, Kota Bharu, and Kuantan.
Rising as an Industry Leader

As rapid growth in Klang Valley led to an increase in East Coast migrants, the demand for express bus services surged. Sani Express not only had to compete with established companies but also had to offer something better.
In 2008, as part of a strategy to enhance passenger comfort and travel experience, the company introduced double-decker buses. This decision proved successful as demand increased, prompting the company to add more routes to northern destinations, including Butterworth, Jitra, and Kuala Perlis.
However, the journey was not without challenges. Sani Express faced incidents involving fatal accidents that led to investigations by the authorities. But as a visionary leader, Dato’ Sani saw this as an opportunity to improve the company’s safety systems. Today, Sani Express is equipped with GPS and DAX monitoring systems and has received a 4-star rating from the Malaysia Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) under the ‘Safety Star Grading for Bus Operator’ category.
Recognition & Safety Innovations

The year 2024 marked another major achievement for Sani Express when it became the first express bus company in Malaysia to receive ISO 39001:2012 certification for the Road Traffic Safety Management System. This not only demonstrated the company’s commitment to passenger safety but also set a benchmark in the land transport industry.
Sani Express Managing Director, Wan Mohd Iskandar Salleh, emphasized that this success was not achieved overnight. It required continuous effort from all levels, from top management to frontline staff. This dedication has allowed Sani Express to continue expanding and planning for more routes nationwide.
Legacy and Inspiration for Young Entrepreneurs
In his early 30s, Dato’ Sani had already built a multi-million ringgit business empire. His success was evident in the purchase and renovation of Wisma Dato’ Sani for RM7 million, which became the company’s headquarters in Klang Sentral.

Dato’ Sani’s resilience and far-reaching vision have made him an icon in the business world. In just a few years, he had received numerous accolades, including the Darjah Indera Mahkota Pahang (DIMP) award, which carries the title ‘Datuk’ from the Sultan of Pahang, and the Outstanding Entrepreneur Award from the Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia (DPMM).

Today, his business empire is no longer limited to transportation. Sani United Sdn Bhd has expanded into the real estate and hospitality sectors with the establishment of Sani Properties Sdn Bhd and Sani Hotel Sdn Bhd.
Hard Work and Determination Lead to Success
Beyond financial success, Dato’ Sani believes that entrepreneurship requires courage, a willingness to learn, and resilience. He never hesitated to learn from experienced drivers, mechanics, and even those who had failed before. His strong work ethic and determination were key factors that transformed Sani Express into a household name in Malaysia.
Dato’ Sani’s story is proof that success does not come without effort and sacrifice. From a singer to an express bus tycoon, his journey teaches us the importance of taking risks, having the determination to change, and committing to delivering the best to the community.
