Success stories often come wrapped in privilege, but every so often, we come across one that redefines resilience, grit, and sheer determination. The journey of Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Su Kouk is one such tale, a testament to the power of perseverance and vision.

Born into a humble family in Sibu, Sarawak, Tiong’s childhood was anything but easy. At the tender age of eight, he was already working as a rubber tapper. Yet, fate had a different plan for him. At 14, he was forced to quit school and take over the family’s fish stall.

“I came from a family of nine siblings. We struggled with the meagre income from my father’s fish stall. So, when he was offered a manager’s job elsewhere, he told me to take over his stall and passed me RM3.40 in a sachet,” he shares

From Fishmonger to Business Mogul

Standing in Sibu’s wet market as the youngest fishmonger in 1957, he quickly learned the intricacies of trade. He knew that hard work alone wouldn’t be enough. He had to think bigger.

As his seafood business grew, he recognized a persistent issue: unsold produce going to waste. Instead of accepting losses, he sought solutions, eventually pioneering Malaysia’s cold storage industry by importing frozen technology. This game-changing move set the foundation for what would become one of Sarawak’s largest integrated poultry and frozen seafood producers, CCK Consolidated Holdings Berhad.

Reflecting on his early days, Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Su Kouk once said, “I was a bit bitter then. Why choose me among nine and make me stop schooling at 14? Perhaps it was because I was a fast and hardy rubber tapper. But looking back, it was a blessing in disguise,”

Despite the hardships, he channeled his energy into building a sustainable business that would not only support his family but also contribute to the economy.

“I am the greatest achiever in amassing wealth. I might not be where I am today without making a sacrifice early,” he shares.

His efforts indeed paid off. Today, CCK Group operates over 60 outlets across Malaysia, supplying fresh and frozen poultry products to countless households and businesses. But Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Su Kouk’s ambitions didn’t stop there.

His foresight led him into shipbuilding, where he formed Nam Cheong Limited, now a public-listed company on the Singapore Exchange. He then ventured into property development, expanding his reach across Sarawak, Sabah, and even Peninsular Malaysia.

What started as a simple fish stall had evolved into a multi-industry empire spanning seafood processing, maritime, and real estate. As of January 30, 2025, his estimated net worth stands at $46 million (~RM204 million), a true reflection of his lifelong dedication and strategic vision.

An Unstoppable Force

Despite his staggering success, Tiong never lost sight of his roots. He is well-known for his generosity, both as an employer and a philanthropist. Many of his employees hail from underprivileged backgrounds, and he is known to treat them with compassion and respect, never forgetting the struggles he himself faced in his early days. “I understand what it means to have nothing,” he once remarked, “which is why I believe in helping those who need it.”

His story is a powerful reminder that success is not dictated by where you start, but by the choices you make along the way. He could have accepted a life of struggle, but instead, he chose to rise, one step, one decision at a time. His journey from a rubber tapper and fishmonger to a respected business leader and philanthropist is proof that no dream is too big if you’re willing to put in the work.

So, the next time you feel like giving up, remember Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Su Kouk. If he could turn RM3.40 into a thriving business empire, imagine what you can do with the opportunities in front of you.
