Let’s be real, if you’re a gig worker, freelancer, or running a small business, getting a loan can feel like an impossible task. Traditional banks tend to favor those with stable, fixed salaries, leaving those in the informal sector struggling to secure financing. But here’s the good news. The Malaysian government is stepping in to help through two key initiatives, Syarikat Jaminan Pembiayaan Perniagaan Bhd (SJPP) and Syarikat Jaminan Kredit Perumahan Bhd (SJKP). These government-backed guarantee schemes are designed to help small business owners, gig workers, and first-time homebuyers get the financing they need to move forward in life.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan emphasized just how important financial inclusion is in a growing economy. “Malaysia’s economic resilience and progress depend on inclusive financing access, something that is easily overlooked by those working in the informal sector,” he said in an Instagram post.

More Support for SMEs

For small and medium enterprises (SMEs), access to financing is crucial for growth, expansion, and sustainability. However, many business owners face rejection when applying for loans due to stringent banking requirements.

This is where SJPP steps in, offering government guarantees that make it easier for SMEs to secure financing. Since its inception in 2009, SJPP has helped around 75,000 SMEs secure a total of RM102 billion in financing.

And there’s even more coming. Under the 2025 Budget, an additional RM20 billion in guarantees is being rolled out to support businesses, particularly in the halal industry, high technology, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, and tourism.

Most notably, RM5 billion is specifically set aside for Bumiputera businesses. The goal is to ensure that Bumiputera entrepreneurs get a fair shot at expanding their businesses and competing on a larger scale.

“These figures prove the effectiveness of the government’s targeted initiatives as well as the high demand for this financing support,” Amir Hamzah explained.

First-Time Homebuyers, Gig Workers, and Informal Sector, Buying a Home Just Got Easier

If you’re a gig worker, freelancer, or self-employed, you probably know how frustrating it is to apply for a housing loan. Many banks require proof of stable income, something that’s hard to provide if your earnings fluctuate from month to month.

That’s exactly why SJKP exists. This government-backed guarantee scheme helps first-time homebuyers who don’t have fixed income statements secure financing.

Since 2007, SJKP has helped 76,000 Malaysians secure RM17.8 billion in housing loans. Now, under the 2025 Budget, the government is adding another RM10 billion in guarantees, which is expected to help over 20,000 more Malaysians become homeowners.

“This additional funding will help more gig workers, small business owners, and informal sector workers in obtaining housing loans,” said Amir Hamzah.

So if you’ve been struggling to get a housing loan approval, now’s the time to check out SJKP. Whether you’re a Grab driver, freelancer, online business owner, or anyone without a fixed paycheck, this initiative is designed to make homeownership a reality.

A Step Towards a More Inclusive Economy

At the heart of these initiatives is a bigger vision, a Malaysia where everyone has access to financial opportunities, regardless of their job type or income structure.

Amir Hamzah put it best when he said, “Equitable access to financing is a key catalyst towards achieving the Madani economy’s goal, aimed at expanding economic opportunities, promoting financial inclusion, and ensuring a fairer distribution of wealth.”

For too long, financing has been stacked in favor of those with stable salaries, leaving gig workers and SMEs struggling to grow. But SJPP and SJKP are helping to change that, giving more Malaysians a chance to build their businesses, own homes, and achieve financial security.

If you’re an entrepreneur, freelancer, or someone looking to buy your first home, these initiatives could be the key to unlocking new opportunities. So, it’s time to explore what SJPP and SJKP can do for you, because financial freedom shouldn’t be limited to just those with a fixed paycheck.
