From Bus Driver to Perfume Queen: The Erna De’Xandra Success Story

Every successful entrepreneur has a story, and Ernayanee Nur Julaimi is one that embodies resilience, determination, and the power of second chances. Today, she stands as the founder of De’Xandra, Malaysia’s leading perfume brand. But her path to success wasn’t paved with luxury; it was built from hardship, sleepless nights, and a relentless will to keep going, even when life seemed to push her down at every turn.

A Young Dreamer with an Entrepreneurial Spirit

Long before she was known as the woman behind a multi-million-ringgit brand, Erna was just a young woman with big dreams and an eagerness to succeed. At the age of 20, she decided to enter the world of business, believing that entrepreneurship could offer her financial freedom and a better future.

In 2006, she took a bold step and invested all of her savings into starting an online business. Like many young entrepreneurs, she had enthusiasm, but she lacked experience. She bought stock, hoping to turn a profit, but without the necessary marketing skills and business strategy, things didn’t go as planned. Sales were slow, and soon, her small business became a financial burden rather than a source of income.

Her debt quickly accumulated, and at such a young age, she found herself trapped in a difficult situation. Unable to see a way out, she made the painful decision to leave her family and move to Bangi, where she lived on her own, concealing her struggles from even her closest friends.

From Rock Bottom to Resilience

With bills piling up and no steady source of income, Erna took on various jobs to survive. She worked tirelessly, driving a factory bus, shuttling workers to and from their workplaces. It wasn’t the glamorous career she had envisioned for herself, but she did what she had to do to make ends meet. On top of that, she took up gigs as a performer at weddings, using her talents to earn a little extra cash.

But even through all of this, her entrepreneurial spirit never faded. She never stopped dreaming of running her own business—she just knew she needed to do it better. Determined to learn from her past mistakes, she attended business workshops and sought knowledge from experts. She understood that having passion alone wasn’t enough; she needed strategy, skills, and a proper plan.

With her newfound knowledge, Erna decided to re-enter the business world in 2013, this time with a clear vision. She saw an opportunity in the perfume industry, recognizing that Malaysians had a love for international fragrances but often found them too expensive. That was the gap she wanted to fill; luxury scents at an affordable price.

Building De’Xandra Perfume Empire

By 2015, she had officially launched De’Xandra, a brand that would revolutionize the local perfume market. Unlike other generic perfumes, De’Xandra offered long-lasting, high-quality fragrances that were inspired by designer brands but at a fraction of the cost. On top of that, her perfumes were prayer-friendly, making them a hit among Muslim consumers.

It didn’t take long for the brand to explode in popularity. Within a year, De’Xandra recorded RM7 million in sales, a staggering success for a brand still in its infancy. Demand soared, and within a short period, she was selling over 400,000 bottles every month.

The next year, the company had reached RM50 million in revenue, solidifying its place as Malaysia’s number-one perfume brand. To further expand her brand’s presence, Erna brought in celebrities like Nabil Raja Lawak and his wife, Zira, as brand ambassadors, a move that strengthened De’Xandra’s appeal among local consumers.

Empowering Others Through De’Xandra Entrepreneurship Program

Erna’s success wasn’t just about personal achievement—it became a platform to uplift others. Recognizing how entrepreneurship changed her life, she created an agent and stockist program, allowing ordinary Malaysians to start their own businesses by selling De’Xandra perfumes.

This initiative gave many individuals, including stay-at-home mothers, students, and young entrepreneurs, the chance to earn an income and build their own financial independence. By making business accessible and easy to start, she was helping thousands of others change their lives, just as she had changed hers.

Lessons from a Self-Made Millionaire

Erna’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that failure is not the end; it’s just a lesson on the road to success. Had she given up when she faced bankruptcy, she wouldn’t be the self-made millionaire she is today. Instead, she chose to learn, adapt, and push forward, proving that with the right mindset and continuous effort, anything is possible.

So, if you’re struggling in business, facing setbacks, or doubting your own abilities, take inspiration from Erna De’Xandra. The road to success is never easy, but as her story shows, those who keep going will eventually find their way to the top.
