Humble Beginnings in Kampung Baru
Datuk Kamarudin Meranun was born in the lively neighborhood of Jalan Raja Mahmud, Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur. He began his education at Sekolah Rendah Jalan Gurney, where his academic brilliance shone early. This led to his admission into Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) in Kuantan, Pahang.
He later pursued a Diploma in Actuarial Science at Institut Teknologi MARA (now UiTM). His academic journey didn’t stop there—he earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance with Magna Cum Laude honors in 1986 and completed his MBA at Central Michigan University in 1987.
The Road to AirAsia
Datuk Kamarudin’s career began in finance. From 1988 to 1993, he worked as a Portfolio Manager at Arab-Malaysian Merchant Bank, handling investment funds for institutional and high-net-worth clients. In 1994, he became Executive Director of Innosabah Capital Management Sdn Bhd. Later, he acquired and rebranded the company as Intrinsic Capital Management Sdn Bhd, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit.
In December 2001, alongside his long-time friend Tony Fernandes, Datuk Kamarudin Meranun acquired the failing AirAsia for a symbolic RM1. With towering debts and skepticism from critics, the duo faced an uphill battle. The world was still grappling with the aftermath of 9/11, and many doubted the viability of a low-cost carrier. But their vision—captured in the tagline “Now Everyone Can Fly”—proved transformative. Today, AirAsia is celebrated as the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline, an accolade it held for 12 consecutive years from 2009 to 2021.
The Quiet Strategist Behind AirAsia
The COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for AirAsia. Travel restrictions and plummeting revenues pushed the aviation industry to its limits. Yet, Datuk Kamarudin remained optimistic.
AirAsia accelerated its digital transformation during the pandemic, launching the AirAsia Super App, a comprehensive platform that integrates travel, e-commerce, and lifestyle services. The introduction of IKHLAS further solidified AirAsia’s reputation as an innovator, offering services that catered to the needs of the Muslim community while also extending support to non-Muslims.
These innovations reflected AirAsia’s resilience and ability to adapt to the new normal. Despite the challenges, Datuk Kamarudin’s leadership helped steer the company through turbulent times, ensuring it remained a trusted name in aviation.

Despite his success, Datuk Kamarudin remains grounded. His philosophy of balancing professional achievements with personal values serves as an inspiration to many. As he once said:
