On 28th November 2024, Institut Integriti Malaysia (IIM) celebrated a significant milestone — 20 years of championing integrity in Malaysia. Held at IIM’s auditorium, the evening brought together leaders, advocates, and supporters to reflect on the institute’s achievements and look ahead to the work that remains.
The night wasn’t just a typical anniversary event. It was a heartfelt tribute to the people, partnerships, and purpose that have shaped IIM’s story. With a mix of nostalgia and optimism, the celebration highlighted the importance of integrity in shaping a better Malaysia.
A Night of Gratitude and Inspiration
The event saw a host of distinguished guests, including Dato’ Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi, former CEO of IIM, and Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, a prominent advocate for community safety. These figures, among others, have been instrumental in supporting IIM’s mission over the years.
In his keynote speech, YBhg. Tan Sri Shamsul Azri bin Abu Bakar, Chief Secretary to the Government and Chairman of IIM, emphasised the significance of the evening. He described it not only as a time to celebrate but also as a chance to renew the collective commitment to making integrity a core value for all Malaysians.
20 Years of Progress
Looking back, IIM has come a long way since its establishment. Over two decades, the institute has faced its share of challenges, from shifting societal attitudes to evolving governance needs. Yet, it has emerged as a cornerstone for fostering transparency and ethical practices in Malaysia.
This milestone year also marks a new chapter for IIM with the launch of a strategic plan focused on four key areas:
- Becoming a leading think tank on integrity nationally and internationally.
- Strengthening partnerships at home and abroad to promote best practices.
- Expanding education and advocacy efforts on integrity.
- Aligning governance practices with international standards like ISO 37001:2016.
These goals are ambitious, but they reflect IIM’s dedication to being a guiding light for Malaysia’s ethical development.
Stories that Inspire
One of the highlights of the evening was the use of historical and spiritual stories to illustrate the timeless value of integrity. Tan Sri Shamsul Azri shared lessons from the Quran, including the story of Talut’s disciplined army and Zulqarnain’s refusal of bribes. These narratives reminded everyone that integrity has always been a foundation for strong leadership and societal success.
Honouring Those Who Made It Possible
The celebration was also a moment to thank those who have played pivotal roles in IIM’s journey. From the institute’s leadership and staff to its many partners, their collective efforts have left an indelible mark.
Special recognition was given to Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysia’s fifth Prime Minister, who inspired the establishment of IIM and the National Integrity Plan. His vision laid the groundwork for what IIM has achieved today.
Looking Ahead
As the evening drew to a close, there was a clear message: the journey towards a truly integrity-driven nation is far from over. While IIM has made remarkable progress, its work continues, and every Malaysian has a role to play.
The next chapter for IIM is about building on its legacy, strengthening its initiatives, and ensuring that integrity becomes second nature in every part of Malaysian society. With a strong foundation and a clear vision, the institute is well-positioned to lead the way.
A Brighter Future
The 20th anniversary of IIM wasn’t just about celebrating the past; it was about inspiring hope for the future. As Malaysia continues to grow, IIM’s commitment to promoting integrity will remain a critical part of the country’s journey.
Here’s to 20 years of achievements and to many more ahead. With the continued support of its leaders, partners, and the public, IIM is poised to make even greater strides in shaping a Malaysia that values honesty, accountability, and fairness.
