Chances are, you’ve seen Taj Mahal Ponni rice on your grocery store shelf—a trusted staple in countless Malaysian homes. But few know the extraordinary story of Faiza Bawumi Sayed Ahmad, the woman behind this household name. From humble beginnings as a homemaker, Faiza transformed her passion for business into a rice empire and more, that now worth millions while dedicating her life to helping the underserved.
Born in Egypt, Faiza grew up helping her father in the family business, an experience that planted the seeds of her entrepreneurial mindset. In 1964, her life took a transformative turn when she married Abu Bakar, a Malaysian Syariah student, and moved to Johor, Malaysia.
Despite being in a foreign land, Faiza quickly adapted. Within three months, she mastered Bahasa Malaysia, enabling her to connect with her new community. But she wasn’t content to remain idle.
“I felt challenged by the perception that women and homemakers couldn’t succeed. That sparked my drive to prove otherwise,” she said.
The RM4 That Started It All
Faiza’s journey began humbly—with RM4. She used it to sew and sell a children’s outfit, igniting a passion for business that would shape her future. With her small profit, Faiza ventured into door-to-door sales, offering handmade clothes and later experimenting with selling kitchenware.
Her entrepreneurial spark deepened when she noticed a cook grinding spices for a wedding. Inspired, Faiza began blending her own spices at home, meticulously cleaning, grinding, and frying ingredients like cumin, coriander, cloves, and dried chilies.
Her efforts birthed the Bunga Raya brand, which she sold from her kitchen and eventually expanded to a shop in Taman Makmur. It wasn’t just a business—it was the first step toward her larger vision.
Building Malaysia’s Rice Empire
In the 1980s, Faiza shifted her focus to rice—a bold and transformative move. She applied for a Basmati rice distributor license through the National Paddy and Rice Board. By 1989, Faiza had become the first Muslim woman in Malaysia to hold a rice wholesaler license.
“When doing business, you need to start from the bottom. If you’re already at the top when starting out, you wouldn’t understand the hardships and the worries of the working class. You’ll also be more gullible and easily deceived.” she explained.
Her company, Syarikat Faiza Sdn. Bhd. (SFSB), introduced Malaysians to Taj Mahal Ponni rice, sourced from Karnataka, India. The rice, praised for its health benefits for diabetics, became a game-changer, backed by research from Universiti Putra Malaysia and a million-ringgit investment.
Battling Adversity and Staying Resilient
Faiza’s journey wasn’t without challenges. In her early years, she faced betrayal from employees and stiff competition. But her principles of honesty, trustworthiness, and fairness kept her business on track.
“There are all sorts of ways people want to cheat in business. Once, I caught a worker selling sacks of rice that were put in trucks. These sacks of rice are expensive in the market.” she said.
For Faiza, success was never just about wealth. Her ultimate goal? To become Malaysia’s top zakat (charity tax) contributor.
“We don’t truly own what we have. It belongs to God, and we are simply managers of His wealth,” she explained.
This philosophy underpins her many philanthropic efforts. Faiza has funded Bersamamu, a TV program that highlights the struggles of low-income families, and she established safe spaces for underprivileged girls to access education. She also leads the Single Mothers Association of Johor and is active in women’s welfare organizations.
From Homemaker to Icon
Even in her golden years, Faiza remains actively involved in her business, proving that motherhood and ambition can coexist. As a mother of seven, she is a shining example of what women can achieve when given the chance.
“Being a homemaker doesn’t mean the end of your dreams. I’ve proven that women can achieve greatness while taking care of their families,” she said.
