This year, BOH, Malaysia’s iconic tea brand, proudly celebrates its 95th anniversary. Founded in 1929 by the visionary J.A. Russell amidst the lush landscapes of Cameron Highlands, BOH has evolved into the nation’s largest tea producer, deeply rooted in a legacy of passion, sustainability, and community connection that has spanned nearly a century.
BOH’s journey began during uncertain economic times, yet Russell’s foresight established an authentically Malaysian brand that would endure for generations. Throughout its history, BOH has remained committed to its founding principles of sustainability and respect for the land’s natural fertility, which has been pivotal to the brand’s success.
To mark this remarkable milestone, BOH hosted a five-day roadshow themed “95 and Brewing for Tomorrow” at 1Utama from July 17th to 21st, 2024. Jason Foo, the CEO of BOH Plantations, emphasized the importance of this event, stating, “Our 95th milestone is very significant for BOH and Malaysia. We are an authentically Malaysian tea brand that has come a long way, thanks to the support of consumers locally and abroad as well.”
The roadshow served as a vibrant community celebration, allowing BOH to express its gratitude to its loyal consumers while sharing its vision for the future. Foo highlighted BOH’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, saying, “As a responsible tea grower always seeking to perfect its tea craftsmanship, BOH is equally passionate to find ways to operate and grow our teas without harming the environment and more importantly, to regenerate the environment.”
The event was filled with interactive and engaging activities for the public, ensuring a memorable experience for all attendees. Among the highlights was the appearance of BOH’s brand ambassador, Fazura, a renowned actress and entrepreneur. She unveiled a special edition of Fazura Tudung, designed exclusively for BOH’s 95th anniversary. This unique collection not only celebrated the milestone but also reinforced Fazura’s close association with the brand, symbolizing elegance and tradition in Malaysian fashion.
In addition to unveiling her tudung collection, Fazura took the stage on July 17th to engage with fans and share her excitement about the collaboration with BOH. She expressed her admiration for the brand’s rich heritage and commitment to sustainability, making the collaboration a meaningful and memorable part of the anniversary celebrations.
A centerpiece of the roadshow was the BOH Wish Tree initiative, where community members were invited to share their thoughts on contributing to a better future. For each wish card collected, BOH pledged to donate RM 20 to the Tropical Rainforest Conservation & Research Center (TRCRC), aiming to support the planting of 500 new seedlings. This initiative underscores BOH’s dedication to urban biodiversity and environmental regeneration, reflecting the brand’s long-standing commitment to sustainability.
Reflecting on BOH’s history, Jason Foo paid tribute to the late Datuk Tristan Russell, BOH’s longest-serving Chairman, who passed away in November 2023. Foo remarked, “We celebrate the life and legacy of this dearly loved and remarkable visionary who left an indelible imprint on BOH’s history as well as the Malaysian tea industry. Tristan introduced many innovative techniques, infrastructure and tea-making technologies that had a positive impact on our tea business.” To honor Tristan’s contributions, BOH commissioned a limited edition tea, Tristan’s Reserve, which was made available at the roadshow.
