Think City, with the support of Ministry of Finance, Malaysia has continued the Creative KL Grants Programme initiative under Budget 2024, to achieve that vision and address the urban challenges present within Downtown Kuala Lumpur.
Since its launch in 2020, the Creative KL Grants Programme has been on a mission to revitalize Kuala Lumpur’s historic center. This initiative focuses on creating a vibrant, livable hub that is socially and environmentally resilient. By enhancing the quality of life and cultural experiences, the program aims to attract talent and businesses to Downtown KL.
How much is the grant offered?
The Creative KL Grants Programme offers funding for project-related expenses, with grants ranging from RM30,000 to RM300,000 per application. The programme emphasizes:
- Projects with RM1:RM1 co-investment.
- High-impact potential projects.
- Inclusivity, attracting new users, introducing new creative content, and diversifying space usage.
- Projects that can be completed by June 30, 2025.
The funding will be released upon the successful completion of agreed-upon milestones and deliverables. Within 30 days of the milestone report’s approval and sign-off, the funds will be transferred to the grantee’s recognized bank account, whether it’s an individual or an organization.
What is the theme?
The Creative KL Grants Programme aims to back projects aligned with six core themes:
- Urban Regeneration: Rejuvenating and repurposing unused heritage assets and spaces in Downtown Kuala Lumpur to preserve urban heritage and create appealing areas for residents and visitors.
- Creative and Cultural Business Support: Supporting the establishment and expansion of creative and cultural businesses to boost socioeconomic development, foster community building, and strengthen Downtown Kuala Lumpur’s identity as a vibrant hub.
- Creative Activities and Content: Strengthening the creative ecosystem by providing opportunities for artisans, cultural workers, and creative practitioners in Downtown Kuala Lumpur.
- Environmental Sustainability: Fostering lively and sustainable environments that attract people to live, work, and play by showcasing effective urban greening, nature-based practices, and innovative solutions.
- Digital Innovation: Promoting innovative digital solutions to engage the community, celebrate heritage assets, exchange knowledge, and enhance visitor experiences.
- Community Empowerment: Building resilience and encouraging community participation through capacity-building programs designed for local communities.
Who can apply?
The grants program welcomes individuals, collectives, community-based organizations, businesses, and non-governmental organizations with project proposals aimed at diversifying the visitor experience, generating culturally aligned local economic outcomes, and contributing to the rejuvenation efforts of Downtown Kuala Lumpur. The lead applicant is required to assume full administrative responsibility and actively engage in the entire process.
Where is the focus area?
The program prioritizes projects within the core area of Downtown KL, a 250-meter radius surrounding key landmarks like Dataran Merdeka, Masjid Jamek LRT Station, Jalan Hang Lekiu, and Pasar Seni Transit Hub (outlined in red) and its other significant areas (outlined in blue). However, the program recognizes the potential beyond this area and welcomes applications for projects within the wider KLCCD coverage area (outlined in grey).
When is the deadline?
The grants programme is open for application from 8 May 2024 till 29 July 2024, with two (2) approval rounds in between.
- First Round Application Deadline: 21 June 2024
- First Round Applicants Notified: 5 August 2024
- Second Round Application Deadline: 29 July 2024
- Second Round Applicants Notified: 9 September 2024
How to apply?
Interested applicants can submit their application and relevant documents at https://thinkcity.com.my/CKLGP and have to attend the open day or outreach sessions organized by Think City.
Successful applicants will receive an official email notification with the Letter of Offer (LOO) and the offer remains valid for seven (7) days from the time of notification. Unsuccessful applicants will receive an email notification if the application is not shortlisted within the same notification period.
