March 8 marks International Women’s Day, with this year’s theme being ‘Women Elevated, Nation Thrives,’ honouring women as the driving force of the nation in line with the aspirations of Malaysia Madani
Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri emphasised that it is a day to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women across the country, irrespective of background, ethnicity, language, culture, economics, and even politics.
“At the same time, it is an opportunity for us to collectively assess and evaluate the accomplishments and status of women and continue planning for the empowerment of women for a brighter future,” she said during the launching ceremony of the International Women’s Day Celebration theme and logo today.
Nancy mentioned that the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) would focus on several important initiatives in conjunction with the celebration, including increasing women’s participation at decision-making levels.
She also emphasized zero tolerance for violence against women, enhancing women’s participation in economic activities, and improving the environment to ensure the well-being of women.
“These efforts need strengthening in line with the agenda to address gender equality, ensuring that they complement each other and open up more space to achieve inclusivity for women,” she said.
Additionally, she highlighted that the role of women’s empowerment is not solely the responsibility of her ministry. She urged everyone to participate and be responsible in supporting the agenda.
“…efforts to create a conducive environment to support the government’s goal of achieving 60 per cent female labour force participation also need to be emphasised,” she said.
The International Women’s Day Celebration 2024 will be held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre (SPCC) in Petaling Jaya on March 8 and will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Everyone is welcome to celebrate Women’s Day by wearing purple in line with the theme.
