In Malaysia, specifically, 29% of the population is affected by mental health issues. It is not coincidental that this pressing mental health crisis has dovetailed with the explosion of behavioural health apps.
While thousands of mental health and self-help apps exist, few or none focus heavily on addressing mental health states and proving to be as effective as claimed.
However, a recent breakthrough app deserves a spotlight: Re-Mind. Developed by Dr Jest Wong of Westwood Clinic, the patented app is dubbed Malaysia’s first multichannel AI-powered app designed specifically to detect mental health states by analysing the voice.
For Dr Jest, he has personal motivations behind developing Re-Mind. His experience dealing with mental health issues resonated well with him.
With his mind set on breaking the social stigma and exploring tech that benefits the masses, he believes it is time to solve a problem close to his heart – building an app that would widen access to mental healthcare and, most importantly, free access to all users.
But in an increasingly crowded landscape, how does Re-Mind stand out from other mental health apps?
One core principle that underpins the strength of the patented app is the balance between leveraging the power of AI and delivering the human touch.
Re-Mind is an AI voice biomarker developed through Level 3 deep learning of machine learning. This flagship product of Project Umbrella utilizes AI voice detection to identify multiple types of mental illness, including depression and Alzheimer’s disease. This voice biomarker accurately diagnoses complex health conditions that transcend all such differences. With just 90 seconds of an audio clip, its AI solution detects mental health issues with over 99.9% clinical accuracy.
This ground-breaking app can potentially benefit millions of individuals by providing timely support and intervention even before they are aware of their mental health struggle that needs intervention.
In most cases, children may not realize they are unwell and in much need of early intervention before it develops into an ailment. With Re-Mind, it can help diagnose the problem and suggest the best treatment. The digital app can help save and improve lives.
According to Dr Jest, he made two important discoveries in the medical community while working on Project Umbrella.
Firstly, he discovered the link between voice biomarkers and the early detection of depression. The AI can identify signs of clinical depression just by listening to the vocal cues in real time. All it takes is for the person to speak a few sentences and let the voice biomarkers analyse it.
Secondly, he discovered that the voice biomarkers can spot early signs of Alzheimer’s even when no symptoms are apparent. This remarkable discovery is set by identifying subtle language and audio changes present in the very early stages of Alzheimer’s. This revolutionary discovery potentially saves countless lives and offers hope to those affected by this disease.
As accurate as human practitioners
Re-Mind is an app supported by University Malaya (UM) that merges medical expertise with technology. As simple as 3 steps—download, record 90 seconds of voice, and get a report, it can detect many mental health states and potentially save countless lives. The hybrid app is currently available in four languages: Bahasa, English, Chinese, and Vietnamese, supporting millions of users globally.
