Have you ever wondered how much it costs to run a private clinic and whether it’s a lucrative venture? Dr. Siti Maria, the founder of Anggun Medi-Klinik, recently shed light on the lesser-known expenses associated with operating a private clinic.
In her TikTok video, Dr. Maria shared her early struggles when she opened her clinic in Pasir Tumbuh, Kelantan. Initially, only her family, relatives, and friends knew her clinic’s existence. She faced the challenge of making her clinic known to the public, especially in the first few years of operation.
To cover the costs of renovating her shop, Dr. Maria had to take a personal loan of RM250,000. This raises the question: How much does running a clinic cost?
Here are a few costs to consider:
1. Rental Cost
- Dr Maria explained that the rental cost for a ground floor shop lot can range from RM7,000 to RM10,000, depending on the location.
- For example, her clinic in Wangsa Maju incurs a monthly rental cost of RM7,500, while the Cyberjaya clinic has a lower rental cost of around RM5,000.
2. Staffing
- To ensure smooth clinic operations, Dr. Maria advised hiring at least three staff members.
- Taking into account a minimum wage of RM1,500 and additional costs such as KWSP and Perkeso, staffing expenses amount to approximately RM4,500 per month.
3. Utilities bill
- Utility expenses include WiFi bills (around RM300 per month), electricity bills (ranging from RM300 to RM1,000), water bills, and maintenance costs (approximately RM1,500).
4. Medicines and disposable medical products
- A clinic must allocate funds for medicines and disposable medical items. For Dr Maria, she spends around RM6,000 on these essentials, including face masks, gloves, syringes, and more.
Now, let’s calculate our average sales
Dr Maria highlighted that even with an average of 5 patients per day, generating daily sales of RM500, the monthly sales of RM15,000 are insufficient to cover all the listed expenses. Importantly, these costs do not include her salary as a doctor at her own clinic.
So, if you think that running a clinic is easy, you need to think twice. There are a lot of hidden costs that require careful consideration. She also emphasised how the financial strain requires her to work 7 days a week without taking a day off to ensure the clinic’s continued operation. To gain something, you often have to give up something, right?
