Yong Song Sheng is an unfailingly optimistic individual. During a recent interview with the founder of PsyHome Asia, his enthusiasm, passion, and boundless energy shone through. It’s no wonder that well-known companies seek his services, making him their regular choice when it comes to advocating for mental health in the workplace.
Despite his relatively young age, Yong has garnered diverse experience in the corporate world, enjoying a distinguished career that ranged from administrative roles to management and assistant psychologist positions. However, he eventually realized that his career options were limited, and he yearned to contribute more to the community.
Skilled and certified psychologists at PsyHome ready to assist you
“In my first two years of working, I was full of enthusiasm,” Yong shared. “But then, the spark slowly faded. I started to feel that my work was becoming redundant, and nothing excited me anymore.”
He began questioning whether he would remain an ordinary person for the rest of his life. Deep inside, he knew he wanted to accomplish something significant and inspire more people by utilising his skills.
Choosing between a job offer and starting a startup from zero
With this in mind, Yong decided to enter the entrepreneurial world. His extensive experience and beliefs have taught him the resilience necessary to thrive as an entrepreneur. He knew precisely what he wanted: to establish his psychological training and consultation centre. “I know what I want, and I’m going to achieve it,” Yong declared.
However, he faced a dilemma. At that time, he received a job promotion offer as a General Manager at a psychology centre with a stable income. He couldn’t decide whether to accept the offer or start from scratch and build everything from the ground up.
Then, one day, he met his church leader, a successful entrepreneur. He asked the church leader why he chose entrepreneurship, and the answer surprised him.
“The church leader told me that we, as entrepreneurs, are the light in the world. Becoming an entrepreneur gives us the power to influence more people,” Yong shared. This answer gave him the confidence to pursue his chosen path.
PsyHome: Providing consultation services
Yong knows that there will be challenges along the way, but he views them as problems to solve. This forward-thinking attitude is what led Aquera Asia to approach him and offer to collaborate.
PSYCHOLOGY HOME (PsyHome) was founded exactly three years ago with the vision of creating at least one mental health expert in every home. Yong observed that people tend to seek help from family members or friends, with psychologists as the last resort. This realisation drove him to ensure that the public could access psychology and counselling skills.
“At PsyHome, we offer three types of services covering corporate and individual needs. We provide one-to-one consultations with our certified and expert in-house psychologists. What makes our centre unique is our combination of counselling approaches with AI voice analysis to detect our clients’ emotions efficiently and accurately,” he explained.
Delivering 90% accurate analysis with Aquera – an AI voice analysis
PsyHome is the first psychology centre in Malaysia to incorporate AI technology into its counselling approach. Named Aquera, this AI voice analysis software measures patterns in voice and brain frequencies, translating them into various degrees of physical health and emotional well-being.
In just 90 seconds, the AI can generate an accurate data report with a thorough analysis of an individual’s emotional intelligence and physical health.
In addition to one-on-one consultations, PsyHome also offers corporate mental health training to help businesses improve the productivity and happiness of their employees.
“Surprisingly, more companies are becoming aware of the importance of mental health for their employees’ well-being. We conduct training on Stress and anxiety management, EQ at work, Empathetic Leadership skills, and many more,” the receiver of Asia Pacific TOP Young Entrepreneurs explained.
Beyond corporate training, Yong said PsyHome also provides public psychology courses to educate the public about mental health. These courses are available in Mandarin and English, and everyone is welcome to participate.
Expanding into schools to foster emotional awareness among children
As an expert in this field, Yong noted that mental illness is no longer a taboo topic for public discussion. With the presence of social media, many mental health experts take the opportunity to raise awareness on the topic.
“Mental health is no longer a taboo but a priority,” he emphasised.
“If you observe, the number of people suffering from depression or related mental illnesses is increasing. According to a 2015 report, the data showed that 3 out of 10 Malaysians are affected by mental illness. Surprisingly, a significant portion of this figure comprises Malaysians aged 16-19,” he explained.
“This is concerning because the age at which individuals experience mental illness is decreasing. We must acknowledge that people nowadays face a lot of stress, and this condition is being passed down from one generation to the next. So, as psychologists, we need to take action to address this issue.”
Based on his findings, Yong plans to collaborate with schools by providing his psychological assessment with voice analysis and wellness talks to ensure that all children continuously grow happily and healthily as an adult.
“We plan to conduct a CSR project at schools by providing AI voice analysis to every student so they can better understand their emotional state and be open to talk about their challenges in life. With this initiative, parents can better understand their children, and it can serve as a preventive measure,” he concluded.
