A 40-year-old guy from Kelantan got everyone’s attention when he showed how he turned “stink beans” or petai into a profitable business. Mohd Zaini Zawawi who owns a restaurant called Restoran Kak Sal in Permatang Pauh posted a video on TikTok where he explained how he can make a lot of money – around RM60,000 by selling petai. The video has garnered over 1.4 million views and many wanted to know his secret.

AbeZaini1, as he’s known on TikTok, shared his trick. He disclosed that he buys petai when it’s cheap, freezes it, and then sells it when lots of people want it. He gets his petai from Bentong, Thailand, where the price is really low. The key here is he knows how to capitalize on the market demand.
“How I can easily get RM60,000 profit? You need to master the market demand. When there’s lots of petai available because it’s the season for it, sellers make the price low. All you do is buy a bunch when it’s cheap, keep it, and wait until the season is over.”
He can sell the petai for less than RM30 for every kilogram. Other sellers sell it for around RM50 to RM60 per kilogram.
“When the price goes way up because of high demand, you can make a big profit. I can sell 1 kilogram for up to RM100 and make a lot of money. Think about it – for every 2 kilograms, I earn RM60. If I sell 1 tonne of petai, I can easily make RM60,000!” he explained.
His strategy is all about having a bunch of petai stored and waiting until the demand is high. He also said it’s a smart idea because many restaurant owners use it for cooking. That means there’s always a need for it.
Based on Zawawi’s TikTok, he doesn’t only make money from his restaurant. He also sells other stuff like “keropok ikan“, durian, and other fruits from Thailand.
