Malaysia has been steadily making its mark on international platforms. We have the globally renowned fashion designer, Jimmy Choo, and the talented actress who won an Oscar recently, Michelle Yeoh. There are many reasons to take pride in being Malaysian.
In fact, some of the globally recognised brands that you see in shopping malls are actually local brands. In conjunction with Merdeka Month, we bring you popular local brands that many people often confuse with international brands.
1. San Francisco Coffee
You can easily spot San Francisco Coffee, especially in malls. This famous coffee chain has many stores all over the country, especially in the Klang Valley area. Did you know that San Francisco Coffee was the first fancy coffee franchise in Malaysia, even before Starbucks and Coffee Bean arrived here?
SF Coffee was started by an American named Robert Boxwell from San Francisco. But later, in September 2011, a government-related private investment firm put RM17.5 million into SFC. This gave them 90% ownership in Lyndarahim Ventures, the company behind SF Coffee. The remaining 10% is owned by Abdul Rahim Zin. To date, SFC has 35 stores in the Klang Valley.
2. Sushi King
Sushi King is a well-known Malaysian sushi restaurant chain that originated in Malaysia (yes, it’s not a Japanese sushi chain). In fact, the popular sushi chain, dubbed as the biggest Japanese Kaiten (conveyor belt) concept restaurant, is entirely Malaysian.
Founded in 1995, Sushi King opened its first outlet in Kuala Lumpur. Since then, this prominent F&B chain has become a firmly established brand in the local dining scene, boasting over 100 outlets nationwide.
3. Marrybrown
Marrybrown is a proudly Malaysian fast-food brand that has made its mark in the culinary landscape. Originating in Malaysia, Marrybrown was founded in 1981 by Lawrence Liew and Nancy Chan. This popular local fast-food chain has become synonymous with flavorful and innovative fast-food options. To date, Marrybrown has hundreds of international outlets in countries such as Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Myanmar.
4. The Manhattan Fish Market
The American-style seafood restaurant chain is a Malaysian-born brand that was founded by George Ang and Dr Jeffrey Goh. The F&B chain was first launched in Singapore and eventually expanded to Malaysia, as it has been widely accepted by local diners.
The brand has expanded its presence across borders to over 67 restaurants across Asia and the Middle East. Its signature dishes can now be found in countries like Qatar, Oman, Bangladesh, Japan, Sri Lanka, India, and Myanmar.
5. Bonia
Bonia is a renowned Malaysian brand that has established itself in the world of fashion and accessories. Originating in Malaysia, Bonia has captured the attention of fashion enthusiasts both locally and internationally. Fine Italian-crafted leather goods brand was founded by Chiang Sang Sem in 1974. To date, the famous local brand has over 700 sales outlets and 70 boutiques all over Asia.
6. OGAWA
Most people probably think OGAWA is a Japanese brand. However, the brand that specializes in health and wellness products is actually a proud Malaysian brand. Established in Malaysia, OGAWA has gained recognition for its innovative approach to relaxation and well-being solutions. The brand is popular for producing a wide range of massage chairs and various fitness and therapeutic machines. To date, OGAWA has established its presence in 62 countries.
7. Good Maid
You might be surprised to learn that this household cleaning supplies brand is actually a local brand. Originating in Malaysia, Good Maid was founded in 1988 and has gained prominence for its range of high-quality household cleaning products. The brand has earned a loyal following among consumers for its environmentally-friendly products. Good Maid operates a five-acre production facility in Senawang and manufactures supplies for industrial usage, serving countless countries.
