Meet the owner behind Lady Wong, Seleste Tan and her husband Mogan Anthony. This Malaysian couple started this business about a year ago as an online delivery only business before opening their own shop in 2022. Lady Wong is a shop selling authentic traditional Southeast Asia kuih and the shop’s motto is “Truly a love letter of Nanyang Flavours.”
The couple previously worked as chefs in Singapore for big names such as Jean-Georges, Spice Market and Four Seasons before launching Lady Wong.
“We started the business in February of 2021, during the Chinese New Year,” recalls Anthony. “We couldn’t fly home and we were stuck in Connecticut. Since we had plenty of time on hand and both of us were chefs who worked at the likes of Jean-Georges, Spice Market and the Four Seasons Singapore, we decided to learn and refine the recipes for traditional pastries hailing from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.”
As they have been selling kuih online for a year, they already have a strong following in New York. There were many people queuing to enter the shop even on the first day to taste their delicious traditional and authentic kuih.
Options available at Lady Wong include the Kuih Gomak – resembling mochi with peanuts, Kuih Angku – the classic Chinese cake popularly filled with nutty creamy mung bean, grated coconuts and peanuts, the Serimuka – a steamed pandan custard cake with sticky rice on the bottom, the durian crepe mill, Kuih Koci – a black glutinous cake wrapped in banana leaves Onde Onde and many more.
They also sell Teh Tarik alongside Pulut Hitam latte – a creamy black rice latte with salted coconut milk.
