Starlink – a high-speed and low-latency broadband internet provider operated by Elon Musk’s aerospace company SpaceX plans to bring the satellite-based internet service to Malaysia. This rumour is confirmed by Senior Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali who clarified that several matters were still being considered by the government on Starlink’s proposals to introduce Internet service using satellites to enable the country to increase its internet penetration rate – especially in the rural areas.
“So far, the government has scrutinised some of the proposals submitted by Starlink.”
“Starlink representatives will be in Malaysia next week to scrutinise these proposals, and we hope this can be finalised in the near future as they are ready to come to Malaysia, bringing these new technologies that would benefit the country’s economy,” he said.
He also noted that SpaceX has some hurdles to overcome. However, he also stated that SpaceX is looking to expand its supply chain in the country. This proposed project will provide an opportunity for Malaysian companies to get involved in space technology in the near future. Starlink’s presence is important for Malaysia in facilitating its digital transformation agenda, Azmin Ali said.
“I believe that with Starlink’s presence in Malaysia, it will be able to further strengthen Malaysia’s economic position in South-East Asia and globally,” he added.
The authorities also disclosed that the negotiation process with SpaceX and Starlink was currently in the middle stages. Musk’s companies see the potential in Malaysia, and the government is currently facilitating the process to realise their proposed project in the country.
Furthermore, the country produced a Digital Economy Blueprint to lay out the country’s plan to transform and develop a digital economy. The scheme sees three phases that end in 2030. The plan would see Malaysia as digital content and cyber security lead within the regional market. Plus, Starlink is part of this plan and could be a springboard for the country.
If this project succeeds, Malaysia may be the first to have Starlink in the Southeast Asian markets.
