If you’ve ever been to a chiropractor, you’re aware of the relief and satisfaction that come with the popping of bones. Some even have the thought that the louder the sound of the popping of bones, the greater the satisfaction is. There’s no denying that it’s a thoroughly enjoyable experience, however, Dr Michiko a professional chiropractor and also the founder of BeWell Chiropractic Centre tells WargaBiz that chiropractic is more than just cracking bones.
“According to the World Health Organisation, chiropractic emphasises the conservative management of neuromuscular skeleton system without the use of medicine and surgery. The phrase without the use of medicine and surgery right away caught my attention and makes me have a deeper interest in Chiropractic,” she says.
Chiropractic heals diseases without the use of medicine and surgery
Dr Michiko decides to become a healthcare provider when she saw her late grandma passed away due to a surgery complication. She believes that there must be ways to solve the pain without resorting to surgery. Hence, she stumbled upon the chiropractic and she found it quite interesting. Thus, she enrolled in Chiropractic course in IMU.
During her university years, she then discovered a unique technique that wasn’t included in the syllabus. “I found out about the Gonstead technique through my reading. The technique is unique and interestingly, there are not many people using the technique worldwide – and that includes my lecturer,” she explains.
BeWell Chiropractic, one of a few chiropractic centres champion in Gonstead technique
She elaborates that the Gonstead technique is a method where a chiropractor uses a very specific way to determine and find out the root cause of the problem or condition. Once she or he has found out the root cause, the chiropractor can identify which nerve causing it and fixing it and let it heals by itself. In short, instead of cracking every bone and massaging the body, the technique focuses on a specific area and fixes it and let it heal naturally.
In Malaysia alone, not many chiropractic centres are practising the technique. BeWell Chiropractic Centre is one of the first few that uses the technique. However, Dr Michiko shares that it wasn’t easy to learn the technique as she had to sacrifice her semester break back when she was still studying in IMU to follow her mentor travelling around the world to learn it.
Treating patients from all over the world
Michiko emphasised that it was tough to get a job as none of the chiropractors in Malaysia shares the same vision as her towards Gonstead technique. So, she decided to do chiropractic service at home instead. At first, her patients were her family and friends only. Slowly, more patients coming in from word of mouth.
“I saw the potential prospect in this field and I believe that I can do this. So I rent a place in Sri Petaling – a second-floor shop lot that is pretty horrible,” she laughs. “It wasn’t a decent office, with poor lighting and minimal decoration. But, I had patients coming in from Hong Kong, Taiwan and India to seek my treatment. I could treat 50-60 patients a day!”
As the business grows steadily, she decided to expand the business and more chiropractors wanted to join her team. After a year, BeWell Chiropractic moved downstairs – a spacious area to cater to more patients. The business continues to grow progressively and she then decided to open another branch which is in Sunway Geo.
BeWell is more than just cracking bones
BeWell Chiropractic has a proven record of successfully treating many patients since they first established. As they are professional in the Gonstead technique, BeWell can help all sort of problem such as slipped disc, neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain, knee pain, heart palpitation issue, breathing difficulties, insomnia and many other symptoms without the usage of medication and surgery.
Due to their outstanding service, BeWell bagged a few awards such as Best Chiropractic Rehabilitation Centre and Rising Chiropractic Advocate by SEBA Award. They are even listed in the Top 100 SME award.
“All these awards give us the confidence to continue doing what we are currently doing. It’s like a pat on the back telling us that we are on the right path,” she says.
Next for Dr Michiko and BeWell Chiropractic Centre
Talking about the future, Dr Michiko has set to expand the business by adding more branches. But Rome wasn’t built in a day and it takes time for her to draft it. Moreover, the Gonstead technique is unique and not widely used or taught in Malaysia. She has the vision to share her passion for the technique to more people.
“Besides, I also want to create more awareness of spinal health. It’s funny when we rather send our cars for service or maintenance but not our spine. Our spine needs to ‘service’ as well. It’s crucial to seek proper health screening as we use our spine daily. Don’t wait until it’s too late.
