A single video posted by Nigel Ng reacting to Egg Fried Rice Video (BBC Food) on Youtube has made him viral overnight. More than 11.6 million people around the world have watched his comedy sketch posted by this funny comedian Nigel Ng or go by the name “Uncle Roger”.
However, not many people know that he is from Malaysia, born and bred in Kuala Lumpur. Here’s some interesting facts about him:

Nigel Ng, 29 gave up his job as a data scientist to become a full-time stand-up comedian in London. He wasn’t raised in a very Western environment, in fact, he went to a Chinese-speaking school. He shared that in hi group of friends, the goal was to be a white-collar worker; either as an engineer, lawyer or accountant.
However, it wasn’t until Nigel moved to the US to study engineering at Northwestern University in Illinois that he started to do stand-up comedy. Comedy remained a hobby even after he relocated to London where he worked as a data scientist.
In 2019, Nigel treated comedy as something like a full-time job. He was performing on television and had been nominated for the Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Fringe – the world’s largest arts festival.
The video of him mocking a British chef gained popularity and people started making the memes
The name “Uncle Roger” was created by his co-host Evelyn Mok on the comedy podcast ‘Rice to Meet You’. However, he then became famous with the video ‘Uncle Roger DISGUSTED by this Egg Fried Rice Video (BBC Food). It went viral overnight and blew up through Twitter, Reddit, Facebook and also Subtle Asian Traits newspaper. Then, people started making the memes.
His persona, Uncle Roger criticising how the British chef, Hersha Patel preparing egg fried rice that was unacceptable. Her culinary crimes include measuring the water with a tea cup instead of her finger like how Asian do, failing to was the rice and the worst of all; draining the cooked rice with a colander. The video attracted more than 5.7 million views!
His persona, “Uncle Roger” is a sassy and condescending uncle who complains about everything
Nigel Ng goes with a character called ‘Uncle Roger’ who is a stereotypical middle-aged Malaysian “uncle” who is sassy and condescending but is funny and nice. He was glad that people have good sense of humour about it and even the chef herself likes the video. They both tried to see how they could fix it and use it to their advantage.
Surprisingly, Hersha’s Instagram and Youtube have grown so does Nigel. They are helping each other out.
His Youtube channel now has over 1.44 million subscribers
His subscriber base jumped from 9,000 to 903,000 in six weeks following the egg fried rice video which he posted on July 8. It was phenomenal and that figure has since jumped to 1.44 million subscribers. The viral video alone has racked up more than 14.5 million views with over 50,800 comments.
What Uncle Roger did is to bring the ‘Malaysian accent’ to the world. It is what we would call the Chinaman way of talking where some sentences are grammatically incorrect, certain words are manged and the Cantonese expression “haiya!”
Nigel is adjusting to being recognised on the streets of London, Not in Western places, just in Chinatown. Let’s hope he can continue to build his popularity and influence. Come on Uncle Roger!
