Following the rapidly rising Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia, prime minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced a Restriction of Movement Order as a measure to curb the outbreak. This order will last for two weeks starting from 18 March to 31 March 2020.
The order will impose closure of premises except for essential stores. Many companies order their workers to work from home. However, this will directly impact workers which premises or stores need to be closed during the 14-day period and lead to workers being forced to take unpaid leave.
Financial assistance of RM600 per month for up to six months will be given to workers who have to take unpaid leave due to the Covid-19 outbreak
In light of this, Muhyiddin Yassin has announced that for workers who are affected by the Covid-19 will be given additional benefits for their work. Employees who are given notice to take unpaid leave beginning 1 March 2020 are eligible for the financial aid. This assistance was decided after an Economic Action Council (EAC) meeting took place earlier.
“This involves an allocation of RM120mil, and as many as 33,000 workers are targeted to receive this benefit.”
Employees are also allowed to withdraw from the Employee Insurance System (EIS)
Muhyiddin also announced affected employees with salaries under RM4,000 a month are also allowed to withdraw from the Employee Insurance System (EIS). It is a god move as many has started prepping for this period by stocking up on the essentials.
Business categories affected by Covid-19 will be given discount
As mentioned in the Economic Stimulus Package before, Muhyiddin Yassin emphasised that business categories affected by Covid-19 especially the tourism sector will receive a 15% discount discount on electricity. This will take effect for a period of six month beginning April 1 to Sept 30 2020.
The government has decided to offer a 2% discount to all other consumers in the commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors as well as domestic users from April 1 to Sept 30, 2020.
The government will ensure the economic stimulus package that was announced will be implemented fully.
