Some people would say you can be either an entrepreneur or a parent, but not both. But the truth is, it’s completely possible to be both (and proven too). There are a few famous mompreneurs in Malaysia who prove they can juggle both and even ace in it.
A successful entrepreneur cum millionaire who runs a wedding catering and holiday and umrah travel tour, Mila Jirin has proven that having children and family is not an excuse for women to be a mompreneur. Here are her tips:
1. Create a time table for your family and business
As a mother, your life revolves around your children and you need to prioritise them. In order to set your time for doing your work, you need to observe the time spend by your kid daily. How many hours does your kid take to sleep? How much time spend on playing etc.
From there, you can start planning your own time table for work. As a mother who wears many hats, Mila Jirin said her time begin as early as after Subuh prayer. It’s the perfect time for her to start doing her work while her kid is still sleeping.
2. Be more productive, make a to-do list
It is important for a mompreneur to have a daily to-do list so you know what you need to do on a daily basis. For Mila Jirin, it’s her routine before sleeping to reviews all her to-do lists that are still pending due to unforeseen circumstances and re-create a new to-do list for the next day.
3. Discuss the amount of “family time” you need to spend with your spouse
A marriage is like a team, it’s important to discuss everything so both understand their responsibilities. In order to make your business works. you need to discuss with your spouse about alternate off day.
As a mompreneur, there are times when you need to handle important matters or attending meetings. So, discuss thoroughly with your spouse to avoid any unnecessary arguments.
4. Get a team to help you
Business is not a “one-man show”, so change your mindset. Everything needs to be done as a team. For Mila, she recommends mompreneurs to hire a team based on project and outsource the tasks to be more efficient.
5. Take time to relax
A mompreneur who is busy managing their family and business at the same time, hardly get enough rest. Remember, know your limit and never push yourself and jeopardise your health. Make sure you always allocate for “me time” to avoid burnout and stress. Relaxing doesn’t mean you have to sleep, spending quality time with your family is also considered as resting.
Being an entrepreneur is great, being a parent is great too. But being both double the great and you can make it works if you know which to prioritise.
