Recently, four people were arrested for spreading fake news about the novel coronavirus (2019-nCOV) that has spread to 20 countriees and territories worldwide. With the outbreak of the new coronavirus, people are desperate to look for trusted sources to get updates about the virus.
A M’sian doctor, Dr Lau Cher Han, a chief data scientist, took the initiative to create a new site called CoronaTracker.
CoronaTracker lets people stay up to date with the latest coronavirus news
CoronaTracker is a community-based project that collects data from across the world and combines news articles from trusted sources to make data about the virus accessible to the public.
Within 36 hours , the team managed to gather 500 volunteers from all over the world including Malaysia, Australia, Singapore, US, Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Netherlands and France, ranging from data scientists, medical pprofessionals, UI/UX designers to the general public. All the data and contents are handpicked and filtered by the volunteers to ensure that sources are reliable to avoid any fake news.
CoronaTracker provides real-time news
Not only collecting reliable data the CoronaTracker also gather in-depth analysis as in the time series to monitor the growth and spread of the virus. It allows users to get access the real-time data of people infected from the virus, total of people recovered from the virus and also dead.
The platform also provides news about the coronavirus in Malaysia
Dr Lau realised that it is also difficult to find localised news related to Malaysia, or Kuala Lumpur only. So CoronaTracker is built using technology to integrate that information and display the information to make the data accessible to the general public.
Everyone is welcomed to contributed through their telegram channel
Aims to gather data for in-depth analysis, he welcomed everyone to contribute through their telegram channel. As the platform is a 100% open source project, all information and data pubished are available on Github as well.
