Oxford is one of the top universities in the UK, indeed in the world. Not many people made it into the university as the benchmark is really high and you have to excel in many aspects. Making it into the Oxford is an honour, but, to land yourself a permanent teaching position in the University of Oxford is a whole new level and it feels like you have won Nobel Prize. Apparently, you have to be one of the very best of the world’s very best, to land a job as a lecturer.
Batu Gajah-born Dato’ Dr Afifi al-Akiti made history for being the first Malay ever appointed as a lecturer at the prestigious university
Dr Afifi is the first ever Malay-Malaysian lecturer to have been offered a full time teaching position at the University of Oxford, where he teaches at the Faculty of Theology at Oxford University. He is a scholar, trained theologian and philologist. Besides, Dr Afifi is also a KFAS Fellow in Islamic Studies, and a fellow at Worcester College.

Throughout his academic life, Dr Afifi has received a First Class degree in Scholastic philosophy and the History of science from the Queen’s University Belfast. He is internationally acclaimed for his 2005 fatwa “defending the transgressed by censuring the reckless against the killing of civilians”, written in response to the 7 July London bombings, which was praised by scholars of Islam and gained a massive readership on the Internet.
In 2019, Dato’ Dr Afifi was shortlisted for the Annual UK Muslim Awards
Dr Afifi was shortlisted for the Annual Muslim Awards, in one of its 15 coveted Awards for Excellence, for his inredible achievements in academic. In July 2018, he was appointed as deputy chairman of the high-level panel on the federal institutions of Islam.
Sultan Nazrin proclaims Dr Afifi as Perak state dignitary
Dato’ Dr Afifi al-Akiti was proclaimed as a Perak state dignitary and bestowed the title of “Orang Kaya Kaya Imam Paduka Tuan (Orang Besar Delapan) Negeri Perak” by the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah. The proclamation took place at Istana Iskandariah, in conjunction with the Sultan’s 62nd birthday celebration.

According to the University of Oxford website, Dato’ Dr Afifi al-Akiti is preparing for publication the results of his project, ‘New conversations on Christian-Muslim political thought, supported by the McDonald Agape Foundation and Oxford’s Fell Fund. He is also finishing his own book project, ‘Al-Ghazali’s Madnun: An Introduction to His Philosophical and Scientific Corpus, with the Text of the Major Madnun’.
