Tan Sri Vincent Tan is a businessman and investor. He is the founder of Berjaya Corporation Berhad, a diversified conglomerate listed on the Malaysian stock exchange. He is known as a pioneer in many innovative business sectors in Malaysia – known for bringin the McDonald’s franchise business into Malaysia in the early 1980s and has since introduced other international food and beverage franchise to the country.
Besides holding stakes through the Berjaya Corporation group of companies, Vincent Tan’s other stakes include interest in internet-related business, water utilities, media, retail and telecommunication. We have a list of some well-known brands and entities that you probably didn’t know were owned by him:
1. Berjaya Hotels and Resorts
The Berjaya chain of hotels and resorts have outpost at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Penang, Pulau Langkawi, Pulau Tioman as well as Colombo, Sri Lanka and Eden Park, London. The group’s Berjaya Land subsidiary also manage and operate several other property and leisure assets in Malaysia such as Redang Island Resorts, Colmar Tropicale @ Bukit Tinggi, Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort as well as Bukit Jalil Golf and Country Resort.
2. Berjaya Times Square
Berjaya Assets Berhad is also involved in theme park operation. Its wholly-owned subsidiary, Berjaya Times Square Sdn Bhd operates a shopping mall, Berjaya Times Square – an inner-city shopping and also leisure mall located in Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle. Berjaya Times Square comprises a 12-level shopping mall and two 46-storey towers of service suites.
3. theSun publication
Berjaya Media Berhad’s flagship publication, theSun is widely read in affluent and cosmopolitan market centres of Klang Valley, Penang and Johor Bharu, as well as in major cities and towns stretching across Peninsular Malaysia. theSun is Malaysia’s No. 1 urban newspaper.
Berjaya Food Berhad (BFood) was incorporated in Malaysia on 21 October 2009 under Berjaya Corporation Berhad. Their businesses include several big names in F&B.
4. Kenny Rogers Roasters (M) Sdn Bhd
Kenny Rogers Roasters operates principally in Asia and is also a part of Malaysian conglomerate Berjaya Corporation Berhad. The Kenny Rogers Roasters brand comes under a worldwide franchise owned by Kenny Rogers Roasters International Corporation, a subsidiary of Roasters Asia Pacific (Cayman) Limited which itself is owned by Berjaya Corporation Berhad.
5. Jollibean Foods Pte Ltd
Jollibean Foods’ subsidiary, Berjaya Jollibean (M) Sdn Bhd opened its first kiosk at Berjaya Times Square in December 2013 and opened the second kiosk at Sunway Pyramid in February 2014. It serves freshly made soy-based beverages and local snacks.
6. Starbucks franchise in Malaysia
Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company Sdn Bhd was incorporated in Malaysia on 7 May 1998 under the name of Berjaya Coffee Company (M) Sdn Bhd and assumed its present name on 16 September 2004.
The company is in the business of providing high-quality whole bean coffees, along with fresh, rich-brewed coffees, Italian-style espresso beverages, cold blended beverages, a variety of pastries and confections, coffee-related equipment and accessories, and a selection of premium teas.
7. Cosway Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd
The business began in 1979 as Cosway (M) Sdn. Bhd. (Cosway M), a multi-level marketing (MLM) company and was acquired by Berjaya Group in 1994. In December 2009, Berjaya Holdings (HK) Limited (a subsidiary of the Berjaya Group) completed the acquisition of Cosway M and eCosway.com Sdn. Bhd. (eCosway) and subsequently changed its name to Cosway Corporation Limited and was listed in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Through a privatisation exercise which was completed in June 2012, Cosway became a wholly owned subsidiary of Berjaya Corporation Berhad.
8. Country Farms Sdn Bhd
Country Farm Organics is dedicated to an exciting mission of introducing affordable quality organic food to the general public in Malaysia and the surrounding regions through its wholesale, retail outlets, restaurants cum cafes and its many licensees. Besides retailing and wholesaling, CFO is also a contract packer, exporter and licensor. It currently exports to the Middle East, Hong Kong and South East Asia market.
9. BORDERS bookstore chain in Malaysia
Berjaya Books Sdn Bhd operates the Borders bookstore chain in Malaysia where it offers a wide selection of books, magazines, educational toys and gifts. The first Borders store opened its doors for business in 2005 at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur. Today, there are seven Borders stores, located at The Curve, Mutiara Damansara; The Gardens, Mid Valley City; Tropicana City Mall, Petaling Jaya; Bangsar Village II, Kuala Lumpur, IOI City Mall, Putrajaya and Queensbay Mall, Penang.
10. Sports Toto Malaysia Sdn Bhd
Sports Toto Malaysia, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Berjaya Sports Toto Berhad, has 680 outlets operating throughout the country offering 7 games namely Toto 4D and Toto 4D Jackpot, Toto 5D, Toto 6D, Star Toto 6/50, Power Toto 6/55 and Supreme Toto 6/58 which are drawn three days in a week. Since its privatization in 1985, its revenue has increased from RM76 million to RM3.12 billion in 2014.
11. Natural Avenue Sdn Bhd
Natural Avenue Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Berjaya Assets Berhad is the sole and exclusive agent for Sarawak Turf & Equestrian Club to operate number forecast lotteries in Sarawak. The company started operations in August 1995 upon the issuance of licence to Sarawak Turf & Equestrian Club under the Pool Betting Act 1967 to conduct the 1+3D Big / Small, 3D Big and 3D Small “A” and “B” Series games.
12. 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Berhad
7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Berhad was listed on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad on 30 May 2014. Its subsidiary, 7-Eleven Malaysia Sdn Bhd owns and operates the largest convenience store chain in Malaysia with more than 2,000 stores nationwide, serving over 900,000 customers daily.
13. Singer (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd
SINGER Malaysia has been operating in Malaysia since 1906. The Company has a network of more than 580 SINGER outlets located nationwide and supported by over 3,000 sales representatives. In addition, there are over 300 authorized service contractors providing services to their valued customers nationwide.
14. Intan Utilities Berhad
Vincent Tan holds a controlling stake in Intan Utilities Berhad, which is involved in the privatisation of water treatment and the manufacturing, packaging, warehousing and trading of semiconductor components. Intan holds a 40.08% stake in Berjaya Infrastructure Sdn Bhd – the holding company for Metropolitan Utilities Corporation Sdn Bhd and Air Utara Indah Sdn Bhd.
The subsidiaries are involved in the operations, maintenance and management of water treatment plants and the supply of potable water to the concession areas in the State of Perak and Kedah respectively.
15. REDtone International Berhad
Founded in 1996, REDtone International Bhd offers an extensive range of services which include telecommunications services, managed telecommunications network services and mobile services. REDtone has presence with technical and after sales support team at major cities in Malaysia.
16. U Mobile Sdn Bhd
U Mobile Sdn Bhd was established in 2007 and its main shareholders are ST Telemedia and U Telemedia provides strategic value through its operating experience and expertise. U Telemedia, a private investment arm of Vincent Tan, enables U Mobile to reach out to a wider audience, leveraging on Berjaya Group’s nationwide distribution channels and joint marketing collaborations via multiple retail outlets.
17. BERJAYA University College
BERJAYA UC’s cosmopolitan city campus is situated within the golden triangle in Berjaya Times Square. Students benefit from the integrated learning experience gained from the hospitality, tourism and service-related businesses within and surrounding the city campus. It offers programmes related to Hospitality, Tourism, Culinary Arts and Business Management from foundation to undergraduate levels.
18. Bermaz Auto Berhad
Bermaz Motor Sdn Bhd entered into a Distribution Agreement with Mazda Motor Corporation in Japan, granting the company distributorship of specific models of Mazda CBU vehicles, spare parts, accessories, and tools in Malaysia.

19. Cardiff City Football Club
Vincent Tan became the owner of the football team after acquiring 30% substantial stake in the club in 2010. Addressing its financial concerns, Vincent Tan took bold decisions to make it more successful and sustainable.
20. FK Sarajevo Football Club
In December 2013, Vincent Tan acquired a majority stake in Football Club “Sarajevo”, from Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He reduced his stake in the Club to a minority stake in August 2018.
Sarajevo FC was founded in October 24, 1946. Based in the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the club is affiliated with the Football Association of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is a full member of the ECA – European Clubs Association from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
21. Koninklijke Voetbalclub Kortrijk
In May 2015, Vincent Tan also acquired a majority stake in a Belgian football club, Koninklijke Voetbalclub Kortrijk (“KV Kortrijk”) in Belgium. Founded in 1901, with metrical number 19, KV Kortrijk is one of the oldest and most traditional football clubs in Belgium. The nickname of KV Kortrijk is ‘De Kerels’.
22. Los Angeles Football Club
Vincent Tan invested in a new Major League Soccer (“MLS”) team, Los Angeles Football Club, based in Los Angeles, United States of America. MLS is a professional soccer league representing the sport’s highest level in the United States and Canada. The Los Angeles Football Club debuted in March 2018 in a brand new soccer stadium built specifically for the team.
