1) Born in a small village in Kelantan
His parents were government servants, teachers to be precise. He was raised by his beloved grandfather in Kampung Kedai Buluh, a small fishing village near the riverside.
His grandfather is a fisherman and he lived with him until he was 6 years old. He then moved back to his parents’ house to start his schooling. Being a bright student, he was offered to further his study in Grantham College,
2) Collect pocket money by doing odd job
After doing well in A-Level, he then further to Leeds University majoring in Economy. He easily secured Shell scholarship by getting a good result. In order to earn pocket money, he did odd jobs and one of the jobs that he did was as a kitchen helper where he washed dishes. Even the pay was small, but it taught him the essence of living.
3) Attended night class to take professional certificate
After he finished his study in 1990, Shairan decided to start his first job gig at an international firm, KPMG in Leeds. At night, he attended classes for taking the professional examination from Institute of Chartered Accounts in England and Wales (ICAEW). He aced the examination and proved that a boy from a small fisherman village can do anything.
4) 1993 is the beginning of everything
His life started to change in 1993 where he decided to go back to his hometown. He quit his job without any backup plan. Once he reached his hometown, he applied for
From that moment he never looks back. He was assigned in Corporate Finance, Forex Trading in a department of upstream in Miri but he felt his passion was not there. He wanted to venture in retail and wholesale. So he was assigned to handle Shell petrol stations in Malaysia and the first petrol station was the one in Glenmarie.
5) Assigned to start the Shell franchise in India
He enjoyed doing it and lucky was on his side when the Royal Dutch Shell assigned him a tough job; to start a Shell business franchise in India. From a small company of four desks and a rented fax machine, he managed to start the business.
After 4 years managing at least 30 petrol stations, he then went back to Malaysia. His success made Shell believes in him and asked him to handle the Shell Global.
His success proves that anyone can be anything that they want. Have a strong believe in yourself and start planning ahead.
