Have you ever wondered why things never go as you planned? You hoped to one day get a promotion or start your own business. However, a year has passed, then another more. Nothing changed. You kept on wanting to, but your brain somehow gave you a hundred and thousand reasons why “today” is not the day. “This year I may be up for a promotion. I need to stay to see what happens.” “Next year is not a good year to start a new business because of the current economy. Let’s wait for the following year.” Sadly, tomorrow never comes and you are always where you are.
Know the power of your “Personal Computer” – The Brain
Our brains are incredibly complex. We can process so much information and make connections between a variety of data points. It is God’s greatest gift to us. Because of it, humans have a conscious mind, which leads to reasoning. However, whatever we can do and accept on a conscious level has to be accepted by our subconscious mind as well. It is a second, hidden mind that exists within us. It is our emotional being which is affected by our continuous, endless inner talk; things we say to our own selves. Its goal is to attract circumstances and situations that match the images or emotions we have within.
The world you live in is determined by what goes in your “inner” mind
The contents of our thoughts, through our own self talk, will have an effect in our life. Let’s say, if you choose poor self-talk, like “I can’t do this” or “I’m not good enough” you’ll assimilate bad attitude, behaviours and (thoughts) actions. If you choose (well) positive self-talk, like “I can do this” or “I deserve success” and feel strong positive emotions about it, you’ll begin to see positive changes within yourself. In short, you will reap what you sow; based on not just what you say but more important, by what you feel – this is a law.
If you aren’t sure what you want to achieve in your lifetime, it makes it much harder to select input that will assist you on your journey. The reason being the subconscious does not discriminate, judge or censor. It will manifest success, abundance, and health just as easily as failure, ill health and misfortune; based on what you say to yourself and feel most of the time, whether positive or negative. If you are fully in alignment with your objective, choosing the right input or self-talk becomes much easier.
For example, did you know that 95% of people in the world never achieve their goals and dreams, and end up failing multiple times throughout their life? This would mean there are only 5% who are successful in life. Yet, are you in the 5%? Why or why not? As much as we want to make full use of our lives, our brains may have other plans.
The energy source of your brain – the Frontal Lobe
We use our frontal lobe nearly every day. We either use it to make simple decision like what to eat or drink for breakfast in the morning or complex task such as exams. The frontal lobe is also where our personality is formed and where we can carry out higher mental processes such as planning. Looking at its importance, it is not a surprised that it makes up 35% to 40% of the human brain. By connecting us to the field of possibilities (or the quantum field – the world where we cannot see with our eyes), it unveils all the intelligence and information we need.
However, to leverage on this part of the brain, we need to activate our frontal lobe through focus and concentration as well as knowledge and observation. Unfortunately, on average, a person loses focus 7 to 10 times in every minute. It is our challenge. Until we can overcome this trial, we can never fully activate our frontal lobe, tapping into our intelligence.
The key lies in the Amygdala and RAS (Reticular Activating System).
There are trillions of cells in our brain. However, there are two important ones that we need to fully understand and choose to work with all the time.
First, we need to understand the “amygdala”. We can visualise the amygdala as our bodyguard. Whenever we perceive something as negative or threatening, it often causes a strong, instinctual emotional response within us to protect ourselves. However, when our amygdala is overburdened with negative thoughts and sustained perceptions of threats, which usually is the case as our automatic mode is always to identify with fear, doubt and confusion or anxiety with everything we intend to do; it could keep us in a state of unnecessary anxiety and stress. Hence, our amygdala will never accept our Success over our Fears.
Subsequently, RAS acts as a messenger of information between your conscious and unconscious mind in the brain cortex (our thinking brain) while regulating and controlling all our muscular activity and all our sensory perceptions.
Remember, RAS loves to bring relevant information to our attention without us knowing. It works twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, sorting through all the sensory information our brain receives. It is always asking us this question: “What is important to my Owner right now? (That’s you and I!)” In other words, what is my Owner (you and I) thinking or conscious about right now. Which is why when you think (and feel) you are bad at giving speeches, you probably will, and if you believe (and feel) you work efficiently, you most likely do.
In short, RAS helps you see what you want to see and in doing so, influences your actions by presenting to you the subject – the right or wrong people, resources and opportunity – to match whatever you are thinking and feeling; positive or negative.
Strengthening your mind
It is clear that when you focus on the bad things and you will invite negativity into your life. Whereas if you choose to focus on the good things and they will come to you, because your brain, or rather RAS, is seeking them out. It’s not magic! Your brain is influencing the world you see around you. What’s more, your brain looks out for your best interest. Here are 4 holistic areas you need to train your subconscious and conscious mind to work together in order to make your dream or vision a reality.
Through Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
EQ is associated with the ability to understand, empathise and negotiate with other people. Subsequently, it is also linked to helping learn principles and practices for improvements in self-awareness and self-management: self-confidence; self-control; adaptability; initiative.
Through Intelligence Quotient (IQ)
IQ contributes significantly to the personal “wisdom” one attains throughout the maturing process. Henri Bergson, in his book Creative Evolution, reminds us: “To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.” Continuing education is a never-ending process in raising one’s intellectual level, i.e. IQ.
Through Physical Intelligence (PQ)
PQ is the ability to listen, identify and respond to internal messages about one’s physical self. For instance: stomach telling the mind it is time to stop eating; understanding the difference between the internal voice of wants vs. needs; the bodies need for exercise when we want to be lethargic. It also helps determine your body’s perfect weight, fitness level and perfect diet.
Through Spiritual Intelligence (SQ)
Not many people are aware of the importance of SQ. It may be defined as the ability to behave with wisdom and compassion, while maintaining inner and outer peace, regardless of the situation. In short, wisdom and compassion being the pillars of SQ. It also helps develop a deeper understanding of one’s own world view, life purpose, value hierarchy and controlling personal ego to consider the higher self.
