You have heard of Dark chocolate, Milk chocolate and White chocolate. When you see a pink colour chocolate, it must be white chocolate with fruit colouring! Right? Wrong, it is Ruby chocolate!
The secret behind the really pink colour is all natural. Ruby chocolate draws its pink hue entirely from the red bean of the cocoa plant – specifically the cocoa plants grown in Ecuador, Brazil and Ivory Coast. These plants contain naturally occurring chemical compounds absent in beans cultivated elsewhere.
And how does it taste like? We would say a beautiful blend between berry fruitiness and luscious smoothness. At first bite, ruby chocolate has the texture of white chocolate but soon enough its distinct berry notes coat your taste buds. Surprisingly, ruby chocolate has more cocoa than milk chocolate – it has 47 per cent of cocoa to be exact!
Some may describe it as being tart and fruity, others may describe it as having notes of lemon and cherry. YouTube taste-test videos can be your best shot at learning more about the flavour.
Thankfully, ruby chocolate has made its expansion into Malaysia thanks to Harriston, a Malaysian homegrown brand established by a family of dedicated chocolate makers who owns Harriston Signature, Harriston Boutique and Harriston Artisan. Until now, ruby chocolate has only been available in Japan, Korea and the UK. You can visit Harriston Boutiques at Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highland and Penang.
